I'm posting to ask if anyone has advice in dealing with trigger points. I awkwardly twisted my leg 2 weeks ago resulting in a sharp spasm in my inner thigh. Afterwards, there wasn't much pain and although it ached a bit, I was able to carry on with normal activities without having to take painkillers. Then, two days ago I felt a sudden electric shock style pain further down from the original injury nearer my knee. It's a really nasty pain that comes on without warning. I saw my doctor who diagnosed a 'trigger point' muscle tightness due to the original injury which is causing referred pain nearer my knee. There is nothing actually wrong with my knee. It's just that the referred pain is felt there. He suggested trying acupuncture which he himself practices. He said that the acupuncture needle when pushed into the trigger point, could relax it and therefore the pain would cease. Sounds great but I was too scared to try it. I couldn't bear him touching the trigger point area let alone inserting a needle in. The pain is so intense. As an alternative he suggested deep massage which I could do myself in the area with a tennis ball or just using my fingers. I tried this at home and when I hit the trigger point area the referred pain was so bad I nearly fainted. Has anyone got any experience of releasing trigger points without massage or acupuncture? A non painful way? I've been prescribed co-codamol but it isn't having any effect on the pain. Any advice would be much appreciated. Sorry for the long post. Just want to get all the info covered.
