Migraine prevention treatment

After having migraines appx 1 per week (sometimes more sometimes less) which may last 1 day or more, or re-occur after triptan med has worn off, my Dr has just presribed pizotifen as a daily prevention. Tried first one last night (0.5mgs) will be up to 1.5 in about a week.

Am worried now after looking at posts on Patient UK, about side effects. Drowsiness (well did find itbit hard to wake up this am, but only for about half hour) and - worryingly - weight gain. The people posting on there had large gains of 1-5 stones! Don't want this.

I am thinking that only people with problems posted on that site, so wondered if anyone else had experience of this. Is the weight gain inevitable? Do the tablets work??

Any help appreciated. Ta

hello. i am on the pizotifen, 1.5mg minimum. I can alter it as i feel necessary. i was getting 2-3 migraines per week. i have put on quite a bit of weight since being on them, about 1.5 stone so far but no everybody gets this. the drowsiness didnt seem so bad after a while. I am undergoing tests for other things as i am having other problems with my head but they do seem to have helped reduce the amount of attacks i get.

I've taken pizotifen for migraine and gained weight. It seemed to make me want to eat any and everything - even newspapers and cupboard doors seemed edible. And it did nothing for my migraine.

Thanks for your replies. So far so good. Only 3 days in and it was hard to wake up this am. But no migraine so far and not feeling as hungry as normal!! I think I am being v concious of what I am eating at the moment. Of course it is early days and I can go a week or so without a migraine anyway, & I must admit am feeling hungry now... oh another ricecake then

SD sorry it didn't work for you. I know I am pinning a lot of hope on this so it mustv'e been pretty heartbreaking for you when it didn't work.

Angel - how/why do you alter your dose? I was thinking if everthing was ok to stick to a low dose, but maybe 1.5 is the minimum before it has any effect?
