and has made herself bleed abit on her shoulders with all the scratching. Apparently she had a blood test the other week for her thyroid problem, and i'm guessing they would only check that, but now i'm worried it could be something else?

Am i overeacting in thinking it could be liver related, or do females only normally get that when pregnant? God all mighty i hope my mum isn't pregnant

Seriously though, any thoughts?

Cholestasis (liver problems which cause itching) can be caused by things other than pregnancy, (alcoholism, gallstones) but would be unlikely to cause itching on shoulders. Much more likely to be some form of skin problem like eczema/psiorisis

It could be down to lots of things elf.

See Here

She needs to get along to the doctors though to get it checked out!

This is weird my mum gets this and it's back with avengance at the moment. There is no rash, lumps, redness or nothing, just an intense itch all over.

She has visited GP many times who ays it is hormonal.

She does have gallstones though so what prufrock says is interesting.....

thyroid can cause the skin to flake and itch.

Thanks everyone, thats kind of put my mind at rest a bit. I am going to try and keep an eye on it though, especially now she's told me, incase it gets any worse. Maybe her meds need checking or something?

Bile ducts might be plugged, or something could be wrong with her liver. Did she travel? It's also a sign of HEPATITIS...

katp · 16/10/2007 21:19

Most liver itching, however, is usually in the legs.... If it is her shoulder, I would more so think it's dry skin.

I suffered from this a few months back now - i itched all over virtually to the point where i would bleed from scratching anyways after lots of doctors visits and a referral to a dermatologist it turned out to be iron deficiency which i now take iron tablets for and it stopped within a few days. Just to add to your list of "possibles"
