my ds is 19 months old and has been up most of the night with a terrible cough that sounded like a seal and his breathing did not sound good . We went into the bathroom about 4 times last night, where i ran the shower to create steam and this semed to help. He also had a really high temperature and i had to give him calpol and ibuprofen to bring it down.

Does this sound like croup? He is not coughing so much now but you can here him breathing and there sounds like there is lots of flem. Is there any point phoning the emergency doctor? Will they give any thing?

My dd never had croup so not sure what other things i can do to help if it is. He is now playing happily whilst i type this!!!

Thanks all.

Where are you?
They don't tend to give you anything in the UK unless the breathing is really bad

Cold air can help too

If you are worried call the doc anyway
Better to see someone during the day than end up taking them to A&E in the night

DS had this - we went to the emergency doc in the end. I'd try and get an appt today if you can - the doc didn't do much (as TheBlonde predicts) but he did reassure me.

Go to the emergency doc. Croup can be very unpleasant (I don't know whether it's dangerous) but it can also be very easily treated. Any cough with a high fever should be checked by a dr IMO.

Try taking out of doors when he's coughing. Steam makes the coughing less painful and reduces the irritation of coughing triggering more coughing IYSWIM, but cold air sometimes actually stops it completely.

i am in the UK, in Kent. Thanks for all your advice. He has gone back to sleep now so will see what he is like when he wakes but think i will phone the doc. I just didn't want to seem like a paranoid mum!

just to update, went to the emergency doctor because he woke up and he sounded even worse. feel terrible because she said he has a chest and ear infecion and croup . So we have antibiotics and an inhaler if his breathing gets bad. Can't believe he is so sick poor little chap. Up until yesterday he just had a cold and wasn't complaining of a sore ear.

Usually i go to the doctors when he has a cough just for them to check it is not on his chest and so far it never has been. So this time i thought that it sounded as if it was in his throat and that i would not go. How wrong! I think i will in future continue to go.
