Lump/swelling, how do you know?

I know this sounds stupid, but how do you know whether 'something' counts as a lump and needs checking out?
I have a lump/thickening/swelling which I can feel at the base of my breast, where the underwire would be on a bra. It feels like it's on my rib, rather than in my breast. I know I probably should get it checked but I'm put off because I have another growth on a lower down rib (same side) which I saw the gp about last year. Had 2 chest x-rays (had to push for it to be checked) and it was totally dismissed as, we don't know what it is but it's nothing serious.
This feels like the same sort of thing. I found it a month ago and seem to be paralysed with indecision. I don't know what to do. It doesn't seem like a breast lump, it doesn't seem anything like what you are supposed to feel for. I'm driving myself mad, I think I need a big kick up the bum.
