Coccyx hurts so bad

Anybody have coccyx pain? For years I’ve experienced coccyx/tailbone pain on and off and it’s really freaking me out I keep thinking something isn’t normal with me. It comes every so often (now) and stays for weeks then disappears and comes back again. Pain relief doesn’t work but I just wanted to know if anyone else suffers from it? It’s the bone right above your anus and it’s soooooo uncomfortable.

Yes, I suffer really badly with it, it’s due my endometriosis. Have been to the doctors countless times and they don’t recommend anything other than hormonal contraception and painkillers.

Only after I fell in spectacular fashion on a nightclub dance floor in 4" heels. My favourite song came on, I was drunk and ran to my mates to dance.... Couldn't sit on it for weeks. I definitely broke it.

Have you ever hit yours?

PrincessButtockUp · 13/07/2020 16:40

Yes and it's agony changing position from sitting to standing in particular. I know someone who had an injection of some kind of steroid (years ago) by a surgeon which eased their pain. Probably only available privately if at all.

No I’ve never had an injury on it. But I did have a 3rd degree year from my baby 4 years ago and don’t know if that’s maybe caused something

Is it worse around your period? I had this for ages, my osteopath sorted in when I eventually went to see him 🙈I have lower back problems and it was something to do with my sacroiliac joint/area x

You can break it in childbirth, so that’s something to consider.

I’m actually on a period now started yesterday 🤔

Back in 2002 when I was 22 I had such terrible coccyx pain that started during a flight from Hong Kong to UK ( 13 hr flight) I couldn't sit at work and was in agony .I ended up seeing a GP who said I would need surgery to remove the coccyx. I decided not to go down that route as thought it was drastic and instead I went to chiropractor who said my coccyx was all bent and they manipulations on my pelvis and coccyx area. This helped for a bit but then during a second trip to HK it came back with a vengeance. I went to see an orthopedic surgeon privately and he gave me steroid injections..I won't lie these really hurt, when they didn't work I got an x-ray that showed my coccyx tip was pointing upwards which baffled even my surgeon as I didn't have any injuries that would cause that. He seems to think this may be going back to when I was very little and overtime as I grew it because an issue.
I ended up having a coccygectomy and had my coccyx removed by the same surgeon. He put me on his NHS waiting list and within a week he had a cancellation and called me up. He has done this surgery before and was very reassuring.
I had the surgery in 2004 and it went fine and I recovered relatively quickly and my back problems dissapeared until I was pregnant and has pelvic girdle pain which was relieved by chiro and wearing a support belt under my massive belly and around my hips. Since then it's been 13 years pain free until now but it's another story and nothing to do with my coccyx. The surgery was the best thing I could have done for myself.

I wish you all the best with whatever you decide

GloriousTechnicolour · 14/07/2020 17:37

I have this too. It started around January and is (thankfully) only when going from sitting to standing. No trauma or anything and my last birth was 2.5y ago. So I've no idea. Probably need to see a GP

Pimpernella · 14/07/2020 17:45

DH has terrible trouble.
He had one injection on the NHS. It wasn't pleasant but did the trick for a year. The second time he had it done with manipulation with a quick general anaesthetic. It worked for six months. He is allowed one more go then they need to think about removal .

puffylovett · 15/07/2020 01:45

Yes! It’s been an issue for Months and months. I put it down to sitting on a hard chair for too long.

CherryMaple · 15/07/2020 06:59

Are you using a donut cushion to sit OP?

BlackInk · 15/07/2020 09:19

Mine broke during labour (pushing stage) with an almighty crack that almost gave the student midwife a heart attack. I didn't notice the pain at the time, but was in agony for months afterwards and could barely sit down. Still not right now, but GP always said to me that treatment was too invasive, so best to just live with it...

CharlieBoo · 20/07/2020 22:40

I cracked mine around 14 years ago after slipping down the stairs all landing in my bum the whole way down. For days I could only crawl, it was agony. It very slowly got better but when I gave birth to my second child 3 years later the pain was back and lasted months. I had physio and wore a thing that pulled the skin up To try and alleviate the pressure (can’t really deceive it very well) it did help, but even now it’s painful now and again.

Flatwhite32 · 21/07/2020 08:02

I sympathise OP! I had an extremely painful coccyx after giving birth to DD two years ago. Ended up having physio on it (and acupuncture) which helped massively. The physio said it sounded like I'd broken it during childbirth, but it wasn't investigated at the time. It was so so painful in the days after her birth! Currently pregnant again and going to mention it to midwives as I'm petrified of it happening again! Would definitely recommend physio and acupuncture.
