What's going on with my tonsil

Any advice would be much appreciated.

So for the last few weeks I have noticed my right tonsil seems to be larger than my left is a little oddly shaped and has a red spot on it 🧐
No real pain a mild sore throat and clearing my throat a little more.
A few weeks ago I did have agonising pain in my face which would come and go all down the right side including above my eye and in my right ear- but this has gone.

Also have a lump in the back of throat.

I've included photos of my normal tonsil and the odd one

Any help would be great!

The right side pain is usually caused by a sinus infection- viral or bacterial. If all is good then no further treatment is needed for sinus infection. Although it seems you still have some infection left as you still have to clear your throat which means the mucus is still draining. The tonsil got irritated and inflamed by sinus drainage. You can gargle with warm salt water to reduce the swelling. If you have any fever or white patches on tonsil then please contact your GP as in that case it might be bacterial.

Thanks for your replySmile
Yeah a few weeks back if definitely get like a sinus infection! I just didn't have this strange tonsil then so I'm guessing your right maybe had an infection and it's working it's way out.
Funnily enough I've had a little cough to so maybe it is just an infection and all connected 😊

The lump on the back of my mouth I've had that months and months any idea what that could be?

@Literallyfedup can I hijack this thread quickly as you obviously know what you're on about.

I have a large white patch on my right tonsil and am antibiotics. It's the size of the nail on my ring finger - quite big. It's very painful and sore and I feel like death.

Is this normal tonsillitis? Everything I read talks about little white patches but mine is one bloody great big one!

And OP it looks like you're fighting an infection to me. Tonsils are my Achilles heel - the minute I get a cold I know it'll hit my tonsils and it's awful!

Literallyfedup · 10/07/2020 16:07

@worrier1983 is the lump on the throat? In that case it could be Gerd. Even if you don't have heartburn you can still have silent reflux. Continued silent reflux can also trigger sinus infection.
@Literallynoidea seems like you waited too long to get the treatment. You can sometimes have big patches or even pus filled ulcers/cyst on tonsils when you delay your treatment. Mostly GP give penicillin as first line treatment and though good it is bit slow. You can try warm salt water rinse or if the pain is too much use difflam spray. It is OTC and has anaesthetic and is specially formulated for sore throats. My daughter suffers from regular tonsillitis and difflam works best.

Thank you so much. I did wait too long for treatment - it happened on a Thursday and I didn't get meds til Monday night.

Thank you @Literallyfedup - also interesting to know penicillin may be slow to act. It definitely feels that way.

I appreciate you taking them time.

@Literallyfedup the white patch could be oral thrush caused by the antibiotics

Literallynoidea · 11/07/2020 20:30

I had the white patch before the antibiotics though @worrier1983
Unless it stopped being a tonsillitis white patch and turned into oral thrush?

It's been a week and I still feel shattered and still have the white patch. So fed up.

Literallynoidea · 11/07/2020 20:31

Sorry I meant to say @acocadochocolate

worrier1983 · 19/07/2020 23:13

10days on and it's still not gone down.
I spoke to my gp online Friday and send pictures he has said it was likely an unilateral tonsil infection but he said it all looks clear as no redness etc. He has asked me to wait a month and if it's still the same they will need to do some blood tests and examine my head/neck and see an ent doctor to rule out anything more sinister??? Slightly panicked now 🥺
