Hair dye allergy? Photo attached

I just dyed my hair with a dye that contains PPD. I don’t normally use dye so I’m worried that I now have a rash at the back of my neck and behind ears

It feels hot and itchy. Do I need to watch out for this becoming any worse or is this normal?

I only did my roots!

What did your patch test tell you?

If you don't dye it usually then why were you doing your roots?

Take some antihistamine asap anyway.

dementedpixie · 09/07/2020 22:09

Did you not do a patch test first? Do you have any antihistamines?

Realitea · 09/07/2020 22:24

I had an antihistamine
Didn’t do a patch test Blush
I was doing the roots as I’m starting to get grey hair!

Didn’t do a patch test blush

A mistake you'll not make again then?

It doesn't look too bad atm. Keep taking the antihistamine. If it gets a bit unbearable then you'll need to go to hospital. If your face swells up or you feel your breathing is not as it usually is then treat it like an emergency.

And wash your hair again before you go to bed.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 09/07/2020 23:01

Defintely wash your hair again asap. And make a note to avoid that bran in future.

I've become more reactive to certain brands of hair dye. Even dyeing my hair just before bed wasn't a plan as it meant the reaction itch was so bad it woke me up. It was slightly less if I washed the dye out using shampoo instead of just rinsing it, but I've learnt to just avoid certain dyes in general now.

In fact I've decided not to risk any again and am growing out my last dye and embracing the grey. But it's not really a choice I wanted to make.

Same thing happened to me although I had been dying my hair for years. The itching and heat calmed down after a few days but I was left with flaky blister type things that took a bit longer to disappear.
I now use this stuff, it's fantastic, no PPD or nasty smell and hair is in much better condition.

Picture won't upload but it's Leganza colouring conditioner, instructions are in Italian but easy to figure out. I buy it from amazon.

gamerchick · 10/07/2020 08:17

How are you this morning OP?

Realitea · 10/07/2020 15:11

I’m fine today thanks! The antihistamine seemed to do the trick but I’ll never do that again. The leganza dye looks great, I’ll order some of that. I noticed josh wood also do a ppd free dye but it’s quite expensive.

Glad to hear it was ok. It's one of my fears, despite the patch test. Definitely worth looking into different dyes.

Realitea · 12/07/2020 21:34

I know, even the patch test can be fine and then the dye can act differently when you actually do it! Always worth doing though.
