Can you get counselling through your GP that's free?

Yes, if you look online you can self refer in most places, it is a long wait though. There is the option of online counselling, I had face to face. I ha a good 10months wait. look at the NHS mental health services for your area and look for self referral. You will fill out some forms, they ring you back and have about a 1/2 hour chat to assess your need, then you wait. Good luck.

I think I need to discuss past relationship issues/abuse which keeps arising after 9 years! And chronic illness.

I didn't really realise that I needed it until today. It just dawned on me that I think about it more than I'd like and feel that people in RL aren't really interested.
