Postpartum HYPERTHYROIDISM

Evening All,
Hope you're all well. Please do not judge!

I am hoping someone has been in the same situation and can advise.

It's almost 12 months since I had my son. I was diagnosed with a hyper active thyroid in March. I haven't taken any tablets since as I was breastfeeding.

I have stopped breastfeeding 3 days ago as I have been told this can be the cause of the problem.

I am super super reluctant to take carbimazole, which has been prescribed as I read the side effects are horrendous.

Has someone been in the same situation?? Has your overactive thyroid normalised after your stopped breastfeeding??

Would really appreciate some information!

I'm super scared of getting worse, and at the same time super scared to take the tablets.

Waiting to see a specialist too.

Any advice or information appreciated!
Thank you in advance!
D

Hi, just been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and experiencing the same thing. What happened in the end with you?

Newmum29 · 05/10/2021 08:02

I had it but it corrected itself at about 3 months post partum when I stopped breastfeeding. I did this for different reasons but to be honest they were quite worried about my weight as I lost 10kg (including my 3kg baby) in 10 days and it was stopping me sleeping.

Hi
I took carbimazole for a year. I was extremely hyperthyroid post partum. No side effects at all from the tablets.
I was referred for radio-iodine treatment to kill the thyroid gland but thankfully the tests I had just prior showed it had gone back to normal and I can't off carbimazole.
7 years later I became hypothyroid!

It's not caused by breastfeeding.
Mine went away at 15 months pp by itself. I took breasrfeeding safe beta blockers to help with some of the symptoms but no other medication. I carried on breastfeeding till my daughter was 3. Had another baby since who is breastfed, luckily the hyperthyroidism hasn't come back! It usually clears up by itself by 12 months pp. Good luck
