Is Mooncup responsible for hospital trip this morning, do you think?

Hmmmm... Felt a bit rough last night, couldn't bend over as had really bad pain in my left side. Got worse overnight and woke up this morning in agony and barely able to move.

Ended up going to hospital this morning (really worried thinking it was a fallopian tube or something, because that's sort of how it felt) and turns out I've got a blimmin water infection! I've had cystitis loads but never anything like this; there's no other symtoms other than relly painful stomach and I can't move without it hurting.

So I got to wondering how I might have got this. Unfortunately not a result of rampant over-indulging in the bedroom, so could it be the Mooncup that's to blame? I finished my period on Monday...

did mooncup feel uncomforable?

bohemianbint · 22/09/2007 11:42

Nope, felt fine! And am a big fan of it in general. Just can't think of any other reason!

i really don't think it was mooncup then. hope you are feeling better soon, sounds horrendous. take care of yourself.

belgo · 22/09/2007 11:45

have you had any other ill health recently? Have you been rundown? Do you always drink enough fluids? These reasons can contribute to a urinary infection.

I wouldn't have thought the mooncup was to blame.

bohemianbint · 22/09/2007 11:47

Thanks thegoat and belgo. Otherwise in ok health, mega stressed due to work problems and general looking after a bouncing 13 month old, but nothing serious! Never had anything like this, am on hardcore antiobiotics to sort it out...

I've been more ill since having children then I ever was before I had children.

NannyL · 22/09/2007 16:42

you can get infections just 'because'

3 weeks ago i was bitten by an insect in the garden.... i though i was allergic to it... so did my daddynoos who is a GP... until a few hours later it had grown to be the size of a dinenr plate (around mu ankle)

Myboss then sent me to my Drs immediatly to get ABs as he could see it was infected

equally last year i cut my hand... a week later it was extreamly infected and i was nearly admitted to hospital for IV ABs as a result of the infection in my hand!

again that was just 'because' nothing was at fault as such, was just unlucky!

lailasmum · 22/09/2007 16:45

I doubt its the mooncup, probably just one of those annoying things.

bohemianbint · 22/09/2007 17:19

I can believe it belgo! No one tells you all this when you sign up, do they?

bohemianbint · 22/09/2007 17:21

well, glad to hear it's prob not the mooncup, because I'm a very big fan and woudl be gutted if I had to bin it.

BBint I suppose it COULD be possible that it's connected - I mean if (sorry) your hands were not totally clean while emptying it, or if it bruised your urethra perhaps while you were putting it in or out?

Probably just one of those things - I have had cystitis bags of times but co-incidentally never since using a mooncup - I won't assume it is preventing cystitis though

BeetrootBevan · 22/09/2007 17:38

Bohemianbint. I had my first UTI in 15 years after using the mooncup and have been too afraid to use it since

BeetrootBevan · 22/09/2007 17:39

My thoughts are that it pressed against my urethea restricting it

lailasmum · 23/09/2007 12:09

I seriously doubt it is the mooncup but it could be unclean hands that have introduced the infection because it does have to get in there. would just be scrupulously clean and look after yourself as best as possible.

Hi bohemianbint

It is possible that you have a urinary tract infection(UTI) PLUS some other problem,.

If you only went to hospital yesterday, then they can have only done a quick test to determine /diagnose a UTI.

Did your symptoms include frequency /burning when passing urine?

Severe abdominal pain is not usually a sympom of a UTI.

bohemianbint · 23/09/2007 16:16

Hi noname,

yeah, they just did a urine sample which had white cells and blood in apparently. I've had so many bouts of cystitis in the past which is why I thought this was odd; I have no burning, backache or any of the usual, just this awful ache in my left side - which hasn't got any better yet. I'm wondering if I ought to go to the docs tomorrow, or just hang fire a few more days to see if the anti-bs work...

The symptoms you describe are not classic for a UTI, although you can experience severe loin pain if ithe infection is slightly higher in the urinary tract, like in Pyelonephritis.

The will or should be carrying out more tests on your urine specimen which will give a definitive answer as to which bacteria has caused it, results usually take 2/3 days.

Keep your fluid intake up and take pain killers as necessary, if no improvement in three to four ays or if pain increasesask for an emergency appt with the GP.

Hope this helps

bohemianbint · 24/09/2007 08:57

Thank you. I might try to get to see my GP, it's not really getting any better and I'm now getting back ache as well. THanks for your message.

Bo it wasnt a tick... just a tiny midge type thing (I saw and felt him*) which got infected a few DAYS later!

(was lucky that my boss is a GP cause i wouldnt have relaised there was actually anything wrong, would have assumed i was just very Very allergic to it!... i just said to him what cream shall i put on here and he sent me straight to my own GP for ABs!)

thanks for letting me know though

a few weeks ago my sister was on holiday and one of her bites had a huge great saucer around it which eventually went away by itself

have phoned her and told her to watch out if she is ill in a few months time in case she has Lyme diease, which by then she will have forgotten all about that bite!

thanks pruners...

seriously i have told her... also emailed her some stuff online! Its really quite concerning actually

She needs a Dr appt anyway (about her foot) so will mention it then

Luckily i nanny for a GP so i will ask him about it tomorrow...

my sister is a VERY outdoorsy type person. Thank goodness you mentioned what you did as other wise i and she would have had NO idea.

Thank you so much

NannyL · 04/10/2007 18:21

Well she has been to GP who seriously suspects it is Lyme disease and has sent her for a blood test

thanks SOOOOOO much pruners.... would have thought nothing of it and i guess she may well have become seriously ill!
