UUUURGH! Thumb nail coming off!

I shut my right thumb in a door about a month ago. It went very black, but the pain eased after a couple of days.

Now - its grown a bit and I can see a hole at the base!

Does this mean I am going to lose the nail, and if so what should I do?

Will it hurt?

DH crushed his thumb recently(ew) and the nail has gone black

Doc said that it is dead and the new nail will grow underneath, then top n ail will jsut drop off, Apparently it won't hurt

IT might still be black for halloween, look on teh bright side

Yes, you're going to lose the nail. Just keep it trimmed short so that it doesn't catch on anything. When it gets too loose you may find that a strip of plaster over it helps to keep it from flapping and catching on things. It won't hurt unless it catches on something or tears off. That hurts like billy! Also lots and lots of bloooooood.

The new nail can take over a month to grow in, but should grow back perfectly normally - unless you injure the place where it's meant to be (y'know, the back of your fingertip) by ripping off the old nail.
