would love to know spod, as ds has a huge phlegmy splatting cough at the moment but as far as I know there isn't anything for this age group (he's 9 mo). hope somebody else can come up with something!

Spod · 11/10/2004 11:47

oh really? nothing? it sounds so awful for her..... although she thinks the sneezing is really funny!

I'm not sure there is anything as Acnebride says. Our dd, just over 1, sounds as though she is gargling through porridge right now. I think there is a loathesome virus doing the rounds.
We are trying steam at night = running the however while she is in the bath, and Karvol vaporiser to try and clear her pipes a little.
As long as they don't have a fever and seem otherwise well, I think that's all you can do.
If Gloworm's about she might have some homoeopathic ideas (or anyone else for that matter?).
Pulsatilla is supposed to be good for snot but dd detected its presence in her pud last night and spat the lot out.
I suppose the main thing to be on the lookout for is bronchiolitis, which can develop from a cold...never experienced it but I am told the cough is a distinctive one and not like the normal "cold" cough.
Do hope she feels better soon, in time for her party!

i think i should go and read up the coughs and colds bit in the book.... any homeopathic advice would be great if you are around gloworm

From the age of 1 year you can give something like Buttercup Infant Cough Syrup or Tixylix Chesty cough syrup, but there's nothing you can use for a baby under 12m. Steam can help, so you could try steaming up the bathroom with a hot bath or the kitchen with a kettle and keeping your baby there for a while.

For relief at night time you can buy vapour rubs for babies (I think Boots do one) and you can break open a Karvol (or similar) capsule and put it on a tissue a little way away from your child's bed for some relief at night time.

I know it's not much help, maybe someone else will be along later with something else.

I think I meant running the shower rather than the "however"....
Will look out for Tixylix thanks Tracey.

Used to work in a chemist, and Tixylix was the thing recommended way above all others from 1 year.

I'm afraid I dont know much about homeopathic remedies so cant really recommend any.

If you want to try a herbal remedy we use these on our two (DD is almost 1yr and DS is 2+half years). Get Bioforce brand from a health shop and use "1 drop per year of age" three times a day. so for a one year old you use 1 drop. add to water, juice, squash or milk.

Echinacea...to boost immune system, recover from or prevent colds and flu.

Plantago...for anything to do with ear/nose/throat, glue ear, runny nose, blocked nose...where there is loads of mucus/snot/phlegm.

Childrens complex contains both echinacea and plantago. our two have just had a really bad cold, lots of runny nose. we used this and they improved really quickly.

Ivy/thyme...for any chesty problems, thins out phlegm and makes it easier to bring up, improves cough.

all of these are fine for a 1 yr old. (i own a health shop and have a BSc in Nutrition...just to reassure you!!)

spod, Happy birthday to your DD, our dd is one on the 23rd!

I will no longer have internet access from 18 oct, so if you have any questions, ask this week!

gloworm · 13/10/2004 20:12

also
a drop of olbas oil on pillow at night to help breathing.

Spod · 13/10/2004 21:09

spod, we are buying a house so we cant justify the cost of internet, i'll be able to use my parents computer most weekends so i'll still lurk on MN for a while!

by the way, your dh can take those remedies too.
