Surgical scar - itching terribly.

I had an operation early in the year that unfortunately didn't go according to plan and I subsequently needed several more operations to try to remedy things. The last surgery was done as an emergency about 6 weeks ago. The scars are quite extensive after so many operations over a short time and there is a big area of numbness which I am kind of getting used to.However, over the last few days the scars have become intensely itchy and its keeping me awake at night. Ive tried taking antihistamines and rubbing moisturiser into the area but neither of those things have really helped. Obviously with it being a Bank Holiday weekend I've not been able to speak to my GP and I didn't think it warranted calling the out of hours service. I know it sounds trivial and I feel bad complaining when so much bad is going on right now but i am tossing and turning and desperately trying not to scratch the wounds. Last night I was awake until about 5am. I will try to contact the GP in the morning but I just wondered if anyone has experienced this and knows of any home remedies that might take the edge off things so I can get a bit of sleep.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

I've had 14 major surgeries and several of the scars itched like mad. It's just the process of nerves healing. I don't think there's too much to be done about it, but it goes away in time.

Try a cold compress and maybe something like Hermione that has a topical anaesthetic. Keep up with moisturiser and stay clean and fresh.

Germolene, not Hermione!!!

Bio oil is good for scaring. It is absorbed into scar and makes it more supple and less itchy. Apply 2 or 3 times a day.

Depending on where the scars are, that can be caused by the nerves regrowing and healing across them. It is wildly itchy, but temporary. I still get this sporadically after a massive surgery 5 years later, but it subsides (until a new bit of healing begins). I sometimes find the itch isn't where I'm feeling it. I have a dry brush and run it all over my torso, and sometimes I 'find' the itch on my back (scar is on abdomen).

Thanks all. I've ordered some bio oil so will see if that helps. Spoke to my physio today and she said the itching was a good sign that healing was happening so trying to see the positives.
Feeling a bit sorry for myself at the moment though. Went out for a walk tonight and have been bitten by midges which I seem to have had an allergic reaction to so I now I am covered in big red lumps and itch EVERYWHERE! Still, its taking my mind off the scar.....got to be thankful for small mercies I suppose.Grin
