Slim Fast - anybody had any real success with it?

I have started going to the gym three times a week and am feeling fitter but not losing any weight that I can see or feel as yet and am getting a bit frustrated!!

I have done other diets before and had success but I want a quick fix and I feel that because I'm well into exercising now (which I never have been before) I wont fall prey to the normal thing of losing weight then putting it back on straight away.

SO... any success stories to boost my efforts? Am currently lunching on a vanilla milkshake - not too bad - mixed it up with crushed ice and am sipping through a pink straw to make it more fun

binkle if you just eat frittata, taht will help

MamaG · 17/09/2007 12:48

(and seriously - I think doing a crash diet/slim fast thing will damage your metabolism)

binkleandflip · 17/09/2007 12:49

Is it still spot-welded to the tin MamaG??

re the metabolism thing, I'm hoping that because I'm gym-ing it and building muscle this will address the metabolism ishoo. I could ask my trainer but I know he will dissaprove so I daren't!

it came out in the end with a fish slice

BInk, why don't you loosely follow slimming world for a week?

UI'm doing "green" days and having unlimited:-

pasta
rice
potatoes
any veg
any fruit
muller light yoghurts

2 slieces of wholemeal bread a day
OR
2 weetabix

plus milk (half a pint I think) and 1 oz cheese

don't use any fats/oils/sauces and see how you go. Ilost 5 1/2 lbs in my first week! (last week)

Still eating healthily though.

I've done slimming world before and did have some success but I didnt really enjoy the classes (too long) but at the same time didnt do so well motivating and behaving myself if I didnt go to them IYSWIM - so a bit of catch 22 situation.

I really am enjoying the gym - which I never thought I would - but I dont just want to be fit and healthy on the inside I want to be slim too (shallow, moi?!)

but bink, you might be better this time, at home - you don't have to go to classes, and if you are working out a lot, you'll be more inspired...maybe

binkleandflip · 17/09/2007 12:58

Aw, I know you're probably right MamaG - but I've just taken delivery of a job lot of milkshakes - a months supply - this morning

So I feel obliged to have them, perhaps it will give me a boost so that I can go back on SW in a month or so..

Have you tried doing a low glycaemic index diet (or at least a no sugar, no refined carbs one)? Worked amazingly for me pre-baby, first diet that ever did. I tried Slim Fast but they are so stuffed with sugars that they smothered my hunger for a short while, then I'd crash and want to eat again really soon, plus crave lots of other sugary things. Must try dieting again in fact...post baby muffin-top is warming my lap up nicely...

binkleandflip · 17/09/2007 13:16

I have tried a GI eating plan before and it did work a treat but (and it was probably due to my lack of imagination and flair ) it was just deathly boring!!

I've just noticed the shakes do have a lot of sugar in which I didnt realise.

ANd though I know slim fast is boring too I just thought that at least I havent got any temptation

ie If I had chicken and cous cous (GI) then I'd be wanting some nice sauce on it whereas with slim fast I know a milkshake is all I'm getting!

I used Slimfast a few weeks ago to kick start a weight loss plan BUT beware - it contains no fibre and I have NEVER been so constipated in my life. Am now off it and just eating healthily - feeling much better for it too. Have now lost 1 stone and 4lbs.

binkleandflip · 17/09/2007 13:21

so would you say to have a fibre rich meal for dinner then?

I am going to use this month supply up then go from there

Definitely make sure you have a good fibre rich evening meal and drink the recommended amount of water/fluid as well.

I have been on slim fast for two weeks and i work out at the Gym 3 times a week and I haven't lost an ounce. I think I will come off it.

amidaiwish · 18/09/2007 19:44

you may be building muscle so may not actually lose weight on the scales despite losing fat, ignore the scales, do your clothes feel looser?

i also find that it takes a good 8 weeks before i see any real body change from exercising. but when it does start it is pretty rapid, so don't lose heart / give up yet!

don't do slim fast, just try and eat normally and healthily with as little bad carbs/sugar as poss. If you don't then you will just pile all the weight back on when you start eating "normally" and you can't go to the gym so often.
