Newly on the pill, how much breakthrough bleeding is normal?

I have started taking the pill again this month for the first time in about 8 years. I am on day 16 and have had breakthrough bleeding since Thursday. I am on Lamuna (a German brand, same active ingredients as Mercilon.

How much bleeding is normal? It is enough for me to get my mooncup out but not like a normal period as such. (sorry, tmi)

I normally have one really heavy day but the last period (when I started taking the pill on the first day) was very light.

I am pretty pissed off as I started taking the pill to have the option of delaying my period when we go away next week (romantic holiday alone). We might as well stay at home at this rate.

Hi kindersurprise, I've just started a similar thread because my periods are all over the place. I'm on the mini-pill - is Lamuna also one of these?

I thought it was just takng a long time to settle down after bf, but now I'm wondering if it's breakthrough bleeding and I should try another pill.

So, I'd be interested to hear from any pill experts too!

Hope you get to have a good holiday!

Hi Rosie,
how are you today? We might as well chat amongst ourselves till someone in the know comes along!

I have just one more week of pills to take and am trying to decide what to do. My friend takes the next packet right away to avoid getting her period at all. Would quite like to do that but not sure whether to wait until the bleeding stops (hopefully soon!)

I really really don't want to have AF next week when we are in Rome.

I started on Yasmin 3 months ago and had a lot of breakthrough bleeding for the first few months. I nearly gave up. On the third month I had a couple of days of very light bleeding. I'm hoping that next month there won't be any.

Hope your holiday goes well. One of my reasons for starting the pill was to delay period because of a holiday .... didn't work too well!

I also had other side effects - nausea & headaches - these seem to have gone now.

I've just read the notes in with my pill (Cerazette) and it says that you can get irregular bleeding or no bleeding (I wish! - although I guess I would then be worrying I was pregnant!). So perhaps this pill just isn't going to agree with me.

I've got another packet to go which will be 6 months so I think I'll see then.

I don't know how well it works running two packets together, mine has 28 pills anyway so you just go straight on normally.

Hope it settles down for you soon.

Looks like I will just have to be patient. I just wish I had started all this months ago then it might have settled down by now.

The weather forcast for Rome next week is rain. So we are going to have a great time!!

Update.
After the bleeding getting worse over the last few days, and having cramps too, I phoned the doctor today.

He said it is common to have some breakthrough bleeding the first month, but that the amount I am having is quite a bit. He suggested stopping taking the pill today (have 3 left this month) and then starting again on Tuesday. I am not sure how he worked this out, but I will try it out.

He said that it should settle down in the second month and if not I should come back and he might try me on a different pill.
