I'm mortified - my 13 mo dd has been diagnosed with food poisoning.

I assumed my dd was teething as she had constant bad nappies from last Sunday but on Wednesday morning she had blood in her nappy. I managed to get an appointment very quickly at my doctor's who asked for a sample from her nappy. I took this down later in the day and it was sent off to a lab to be diagnosed. The result came back on Friday with a diagnosis of Campylobacter. My doctor said this is the most common cause of food poisoning in adults but the first time he has ever heard of it in a child so young. She's ok now but has anyone else ever had any experience of anything similar, it says on the internet that the most likely cause is shellfish, eggs or milk, milk being the only thing she has eaten/drank out of the three. My mom did give her skimmed milk by mistake on her weetabix - could this be anything to do with it.

imo less likely to be foodborne than picked up from someone else who had it

also found widely in raw chicken

fact it was skimmed milk nowt to do with it

My DS had salmonella poisoning when he was 5mths old and still on ff, no solids/milk etc at all.

Still don't know how he got it, the only thing that we thought it might have been when I was preparing food (we had chicken a few days before) and that I somehow contaminated his milk. Cannot say how this happened as I was always very careful about food hygiene.

He was on antibiotics, after a couple of days he was fine.

Hope your dd is better soon.

Oh your poor dd i had compylobacter after ds was born, totally knocked me sideways. Can come from pork too which how i think i got it.

elasticbandstand · 16/09/2007 19:36

poor dd
i am sure too it wasnt skimmed milk.
most like causes as you say but may be it was one of the other not so likely causes. could she have caught it from another person?
hope she is better soon

My 3 year old dd got it when we were on holiday in Majorca, she was really ill poor thing.I was mortified when we found out, we even had the enviromental officer visit our home with the results.
She told us it can be Cheese or Chicken. I am convinced my dd is still not right now a year and a half later. She seems to have a really sensitive tummy and can come down with tummy bugs very quickly, we are going through one at the mo.

I feel for your dd cause it isn't nice and it can take ages to get over xx

(vicksie - try yakult or similar to repopulate her 'friendly bacteria')

I cannot tell you how much better that makes me feel to know it might have been the milk. Silly perhaps, but I have always felt really guilty, that I had done something wrong.

He is 3 now, and very healthy, so obviously no longterm effects, but salmonella can be lifethreatening at such a young age.
