And my skin has become a spotty mess, I have developed dandruff, whats going on, I thought skin etc was going to improve, never used to have spots apart from the very odd one! And I've actually not had a fag for 6 weeks, help!

Being healthy makes you feel crap and miserable. Don't do it!

anorak · 15/09/2007 11:43

You need Beety - she knows all about this kind of thing.

Rhubarb · 15/09/2007 11:44

She'd tell you to start smoking and drinking again immediately! It's the only decent thing to do.

PMSL @Rhubarb, my sentiments exactly!

It's all the toxins vacating your body...... Have you a bad cough as well?

Go and have a facial, you will start to look better in a week or so, use some vitC moisturiser and up your water intake to 2-3litres a day.

lilacclaire · 15/09/2007 11:46

I have been smoking for 19 years (don't ask) im only 31! and a regular weekend binger for years

Well done for stopping smoking.

2 litres of water a day and cut out alcohol.

I have only done this for a week and it shows already. It really does seem to work, even though I feel awash and keep needing the toilet!

Take a vit/min supplement and eat avocados/oily fish and lots of fruit and salad/veg - to boost vit c levels and essential fats in your diet. Your bod is expelling the toxins and needs a bit of extra TLC - it will clear up eventually.

Well done for giving up the fags - it VERY hard so good on you!

Rhubarb · 15/09/2007 11:57

Anyone fancy a drink then? No?

Wisteria · 15/09/2007 11:58

so naughty Rhubarb.....

What time is wine o'clock on a Sat then?

Erm, roundabout now?

motherinferior · 15/09/2007 12:01

Actually 'toxins' are a bit of a myth, I believe.

I have to finalise accounts for a client and am on here instead...... might take the dog over the fields for a break as there is a nice little real ale pub cunningly hidden 'en-route'.

I bet you say that to all the boys

lilacclaire · 15/09/2007 12:15

I can only cling to the hope that the toxins are NOT a myth motherinferior otherwise i am destined to look like a spotty faced flaky headed mess forever!
I have Udo Oil capsules which i haven't started to take yet, they are meant to be excellent (any feedback on these would be appreciated also) and multibionta vit tabs which I used to take, will start again on these.

lilacclaire · 15/09/2007 12:19

It's like LL said, probably because you have given up and your body is trying to rid itself of all the build up. Like a detox, it makes you look and feel like crap for weeks before the glowing you underneath is revealed. Don't let it be wasted, keep plugging away and it'll clear up. Just shows what is being stored in you while you're smoking!
Nice one for quitting x

Cloudhopper · 15/09/2007 13:02

I am in the same boat lilacclaire. Well, I gave up smoking 4 weeks ago and look dreadful, and have been ill virtually ever since. I have had lots of spots etc.

I have my own theory as to why this happens:

Smoking has all kinds of different effects on body chemistry, so if you have smoked for a while, it will take time to adjust. While it is going a little bit haywire, you need to bear with it.

For example, it dries out the skin, so perhaps the body was previously over-compensating for that by producing excess oil. Now that the smoking has stopped, the body needs time to reduce the oil production. Initially you might feel and look worse. However, having given up before, I know that after a couple of months, you will definitely look at least 5 years younger .

Also, nicotine is apparently a bactericide - it kills germs. So in the early stages after giving up, you can be more susceptible to getting ill.

Hope this helps - wait a while, eat wisely, drink water and honestly you will notice the improvement eventually.

lilacclaire · 15/09/2007 14:14

Thanks Cloudhopper, I don't mind waiting months if its going to be worth it in the end.
Ive smoked and drank longer than i've not, so I suppose it will take a while to get rid of all the crap in my system.
Smug face is resumed
