Am soo fed up. Started on a weight loss programme 5 weeks ago and started off with using Slimfast which I have abandoned as I have never (and I do mean NEVER) been so constipated in all my life. Continued with healthy eating and so far have shed 1 stone and 4 lbs (hurrah). But I felt constipated again this week and now have external piles which are painful and bleeding (TMI sorry) - am sooo hacked off as I've never had them before. I was never constipated while I ate a crappy diet but since embarking on the healthy eating thing it's become an on and off problem.

Am eating loads of fruit and veg plus eating multi-grain Ryvita at lunch time and drinking fruit juice. It's made things less painful but I still have the bleeding (literally) piles - am off to my GP this evening. As I suffer with health anxiety any trip to the GP fills me with dread so this is the last thing I need. Piles are already becoming bowel cancer in my head even though I know I have all the symptoms of piles.

Sorry if all this is TMI but am soo hacked off.

Looked at Ducolease but I already eat a good diet so cannot think they'd make anything easier.

I wouldn't call slimfast healthy eating tbh! Sounds like the piles originated from then. Once you've got them, they can be difficult to shift.

I take it you've tried the usual Anusol/PrepH treatments?

Piffle · 14/09/2007 11:15

he will give you ultraproct and they will work
Find some soft eating licorice, it tastes fab eat about 7 pieces a day or more
That will sort you give them time to heal
I speak from recent experience

PigeonPie · 14/09/2007 11:15

I've always eaten a reasonably healthy diet but when I'm pg I have got constipated and piles - it's horrid isn't it. I found that as well as eating lots of fresh fruit and veg, if I eat 3 or 4 dried apricots / prunes a day it can help as can lactulose. I was also recommended when I was really bunged up to try orange juice with some hot water in - that helped too.

Anusol cream helped with the healing.

Hope you feel better soon.

Thanks folks. I agree Katsma - Slimfast is not healthy eating - tried it as was desperate. Yes I have tried the usual treatments but only for a few days.

Thanks for the soft liquorice tip piffle

Will try thr orange juice in hot water as well.

Currently drinking Tescos freshly squeezed valenica orange and raspberry juice. Lovely.

how can you be 'pissed' off with piles?

sorry, I recommend linseeds from Holland & Barrett, they're really cheap and work wonders. For years I was advised to eat more bran which did absolutely nothing for me and in fact made things worse.

Try them, give at least a fortnight for results.

Theclosetpagan · 14/09/2007 12:10

Ah - have some Linseed in the cupboard - will start adding it to the food.

Thanks for that tip.

Even worse I used to the community midwife at my GP's surgery so he and I know each other quite well. The thought of showing him my piles is just hideous - obviously will never be able to see him EVER again.

If it's any consolation I didn't have to show my GP mine - he just believed me!

EscapeFrom · 14/09/2007 13:19

You need to drink lots and lots and lots of water - aim for about 3 litres a day!. Otherwise all the fibre in the world won't work.

NadineBaggott · 14/09/2007 13:25

I hardly drink any water so that may have been my problem with bran.

No such problems with linseed

3l is an awful lot!

EscapeFrom · 14/09/2007 13:29

Yes - but get a pint glass or 500 ml bottle. 1 at breakfast
1 at 11
1 with l;unch
1 at 3
1 at 5
1 at 7

Job done.

EscapeFrom · 14/09/2007 13:30

But thinkm of the effect of unwatered fibre on your bowels! Like papier mache - it will block more than help!

Apples, peas, raisins, plums etc all very good. kiwi is excellent apparently.

jooleybee · 14/09/2007 13:30

Water is V good tio, consider myself an expect after just having my "Toncills"!!! removed Ouch. Doctor also prescribed Fibogel which may be available over counter. Also try suppositories, they really do heal from the inside.

Piggy · 14/09/2007 13:38

Try having a couple of slices of lemon in hot water every morning as soon as you get up. It's refreshing, a really good cleanser and also helps to flush toxins out.

PigeonPie · 14/09/2007 19:39

How did your appointment go TCP?

fedupwasherwoman · 14/09/2007 19:53

Lakeland and health food shops generally sell Australian soft eating liquorice and half a dozen pieces of that a day when things are bad should sort you out.

If you haven't got constipation don't eat that many pieces - you have been warned .

fortunecookie · 14/09/2007 19:57

dh, who was operated on for a herniated pile in June, asked me to add that bananas, rice, cooked carrots & blueberries are off limits. He takes it too far, imo, because he refuses to eat any of these foods, ever.
