DD1 15 has 2 infected cysts under her eyelid.
Once the infection clears up gp said they will prob need removing.
DD is so fickle she fainted when we found a lice in her hair aged 12 !
Can anyone reassurre her that its not too bad ?
cheers

I had a meibomium (sp) cyst removed from my eyelid back in April. Will give you it as it was cos no point in anything else.

Basically local anaesthetic into eyelid, STINGS for about 30 seconds but then nothing. YOu can feel them touching around eye but no pain what so ever. Because they removed it from inside there was no stitches, just a thick dressing. All over with in about 20 mins maximum. Felt fine, even went for coffee and cake in WRVS coffee shop whilst waiting to be collected by dh.

Started feeling discomfort about 1hr after procedure (anaesthetic wore off) and eyes were constantly watering. The most uncomfortable bit was the eye that had been done moving and brushing against eyelid. Ended up taking both pharm strength ibuprofen and paracetamol (alternate every 2-3 hours). Had black eye for 48hrs then just slight bruising.

Best tips I can give you are

  • take some kind of painkiller soon after procedure if poss, just to make her feel a bit more comfortable.
  • encourage her to sleep as much as poss for the rest of the day. Will rest her eye and again make her feel more comfortable.
  • it may sound daft but easy eating food, I found it tricky to put my head down/forward to see what was on my plate so stuck to sandwiches, yoghurts, chips anything that doesn't need too much concentration.

All in all I was fully functioning within 24hrs just looked as if I had been beaten up a bit.

Hope that helps, sorry so long

I have cysts under my eyelids - they have been there for 30 years and rarely cause me a problem. I was offered surgery to remove them, but at the time the specialist said that as they aren't unsightly, and don't cause me too much grief, he wouldn't recommend taking them out.

Every now and again they flare up - roughly two or three times a year - and I have a few days of mild soreness before they go back down again. Otherwise they cause me no problems at all. If you get really close up when they are inflamed you can see them, but otherwise you can't.

Current recommendations may not be the same as they were so long ago - but I thought it was worth mentioning that it may not actually be necessary to remove the cysts.
