Painful sore throat one side only

I have had the most painful sore throat since Friday. It came on suddenly. No other symptoms. Just one side. No white spots or visible swelling. I feel OK until I swallow. I had a video consultation with the gp today but it wasn't too successful... Trying to hold camera, torch and press tongue down. Anyway she prescribed an antibiotic just to be safe. I have tried Paracetamol and ibuprofen but nothing touches the pain. Has anyone else had this? Night time is horrible, my throat feels thick as if there is mucus building up. I have to keep sipping water which means getting up all night.

It does sound like tonsillitis to me. As there doesn't seem to be any white spots it might be the viral type rather than bacterial. Maybe nurofen plus which is codeine and ibuprofen to help with pain better. You could buy that in the chemist tomorrow.

Last time I had tonsillitis I discovered that Strefen lozenges helped make the pain a bit more bearable.
