What do you think about this? My ds (15 months) has a small, pea sized lump on the base of his neck below his ear. I noticed it a week ago and it hasn't got any bigger and doesn't cause him any discomfort. He's currently got 4 molars coming through but us in good health otherwise. I'm planning on taking him to the doctor but suspect they'll tell me to monitor it and go back if it gets worse. Anyone got any experience of this?

My DD used to get lumps in her neck quite frequently and the doctors always explained it as enlarged lymph nodes, usually if she was fighting a bug or something.

Does it move about quite easily when you press it - the doctors seem to think this was good, more worrying if it was "static".

its a lymph node
is he under the weather?
they tend to swell a little when the body is fighting an infection

tortoisekinnockSHELL · 13/09/2007 11:33

Sounds like he has a virus - dd gets these 'lymph nodes' when she's under the weather.

BobbyGrantycal · 13/09/2007 11:34

i should say it sounds like a lymph node. i am not a doctor

It's quite hard (feels like a pea) but it squidges about under the skin iykwim. He doesn't seem under the weather and the only time it bothers him is when I'm prodding it! I only haven't taken him to the doctor so far because we are living abroad at the moment and haven't organised a doctor yet. Perhaps I'll leave it a couple more days and see if it gets bigger?

My two children have had this. glands up. ds used to get them around the back of his neck too. He once had one that they told me to keep and eye on as apparently they can sometimes get inflamed and large but it went away on its own.

it is very likely to be a lymph node - some people are more susceptible (sp) to them. They can appear under on your neck under ear, in your arm pit and in the groin.

They are there to fight off infections, so your DS may be getting a cold.

I know about these as i had one that got infected and subsequently removed.

If your worried go to the GP just to be sure.

BobbyGrantycal · 13/09/2007 12:11

Just to add - yes do keep an eye if it gets bigger....ds2 had lymphangitis 18 months ago. ABout 5 lymph nodes around his neck swelled up and he was in hospital for 5 days on IV antibiotics. Not that common but get it checked if it lasts too long or gets bigger.

PetitFilou1 · 13/09/2007 14:13

Don't leave it, take him to the GP - I'm sure it is nothing but it isn't worth leaving it if it isn't. My boss has a 2 year old with a (large) lump in her neck and she has been in an out of hospital for the last five weeks with her daughter now on strong drugs to shrink it before she has an operation to have it removed. What is the harm in getting in checked?
