Cold virus won’t go away normal?

I’ve had a really bad cold, sore throat, swollen glands, cold sore on nose for the past two and a half weeks. It’s not a full blown cold any more but still blocked nose and swollen glands. A few days before I started with this I had a blood test for hormones this came back low white blood cells 3.7. I’m panicking there is something wrong as I’m taking ages to get better. I’m stressed and down too which isn’t helping. They wanted to repeat the blood test in two weeks but I don’t want to until I’m better. Why is it taking longer to get better 😩

The blood tests are to see if your white cells have gone back into normal range, white cells are responsible for fighting infection. If your illness is lingering then it would make sense to have your blood test to see where things stand.

Did they give you a blood form? I know our clinic is no longer doing blood tests, you have to go to the hospital with your form.

Blood test was done before I was poorly with the cold - was due to finding out why I hadn’t had a period for a while.
Do u think I need to worry ? What could it be?

I have this, except it’s nearly 4 weeks now. I’m assuming it’s just a lingering bug, and that being stuck at home isn’t helping me to fight it!

Zinc... Check vit d levels.. Liposomal vit c?

Rockinghorse2019 · 07/04/2020 21:17

Not feeling great again and quite anxious. Will there be something wrong with my immune system ?
The blood test I had before I started with cold was slightly low white blood would have detected the cold before it came out? What else could it be?

Sometimes symptoms just linger. Mine has been going on for 4.5 weeks and I’m pretty sure that being at home worrying about it (along with worrying about everything else!) is preventing me from getting better.
Yes the blood test likely just picked up your cold... your body starts building an immune response before you have symptoms.

Thank you for replying. really struggling woke up and feel rubbish swollen glands and runny nose can’t stop crying

Would a GP speak to me do you think they as they are only doing urgent care

OP posts:
HoffiCoffi13 · 08/04/2020 08:18

They might, but I really don’t think there is much they can do about swollen glands and a runny nose.
What are you currently taking to help your symptoms? If I was you I’d take regular paracetamol, get a nasal spray from the chemist, plenty of fluids, a good vitamin supplement and rest as much as possible.
I’m finally starting to feel a little bit better after 4.5 weeks.

Sorry if this is a stupid thing to say but could it be an allergy? I spent the whole of March feeling ill - really bad painful throat, tight chest, runny nose etc NO fever though so I don't believe it was Covid. I tried everything that usually works for a cold such as vitamin C, rest, lemon and honey but no change at all in my symptoms. I started getting really scared it was something sinister. I then noticed lots of people on Mumsnet were saying they had allergy symptoms now (is it tree pollen or something?) and I got a cat at the end of Feb. Out of desperation I started taking a daily antihistamine not believing it was allergy related at all and my symptoms hugely improved! You can develop an allergy at any age. It's not unusual to develop hay-fever as an adult so it might be worth considering this. I was sure mine was a virus but the antihistamines have almost completely stopped my symptoms.

Sammy867 · 08/04/2020 08:24

Make sure hay fever isn’t overlapping either. Glands can stay up months after an infection but the pollen count is the highest it’s been in 70 years this week. I’ve been suffering usual hay fever symptoms which are runny and blocked nose, full sinuses and headaches. The cold may have cleared and hay fever has taken over?

FTMF30 · 08/04/2020 08:40

I'm kind of in the same boat as you OP.
I have been ill since the end of Feb.

I went to the Drs as I had suffered a terrible headache, high temperature, really sore throat, constantly bringing up lots of phlegm and conjunctivitis too. I was put on antibiotics for 10 days as it was suspected tonsillitis. Felt slightly better for a while but not 100%. Was considering going back to the Drs but then this cv19 thing came out so couldnt go.

Ever since Feb, I've been very susceptible to a sore, burny throat. I don't know what the hell is wrong with me but it's seriously draining. I also had a very late period (2 weeks late).

Following this thread with interest.

DH and I have had a horrible head cold, sore throat and raised glands for 3-4 weeks now. It’s been grim. Very sure it’s not hay fever as we both have it.

Rockinghorse2019 · 08/04/2020 09:12

Thank you lovely ladies you are really helping I might try an antihistamine.
I have a seven month old baby which means no rest too! Keep posting.....

Started taking an antihistamine which has helped a few days and got a nasal spray too. Feel quite achey tonight and glands up again and sore throat. Husband thinks it is stress as I’m not coping with what’s happening. I have cried a lot today and now worried it’s back fully to over 3 weeks ago.

I think you should follow up on a blood test for low white cell count as there are a few sinister things it can be. Just in case.
Hopefully just a cold or mild corona virus.

Rockinghorse2019 · 15/04/2020 17:03

Can either last this long ? Bit worried about getting blood test done in current situation I have health anxiety so very anxious at the minute. What sorts of things could it be?

OP posts:
Rockinghorse2019 · 15/04/2020 21:39

Could stress be causing me to feel like this and the symptoms continuing body aches and sore throat funny nose. I can’t stop thinking about it.
