What I thought was teething is moving on to........

Very strange - have had four days of teething, two nights of four hours of sleep, bright red cheeks and a tooth in the middle! In the middle of it all he started being snotty, so I presumed just an added bonus to teething, then this morning he had the most horrendously horrid, smelly runny tummy, and again after his lunch time sleep. Still grizzly and whiney etc. Gave him tea which he didn't reject but wasn't overly keen on having, but was loving the yoghurt. Had bath, half of bottle (fell asleep but I didn't notice) sat him up to do a burp, nothing came, put in half of his medised (for teething and cold pains and sleeping help) and he clamped his mouth shut, looked up at me and projectile vomited EVERYWHERE! I have never experienced anything like it in my life - ohmigod!!!! Poor little chap, straight back into the bath, clean pyjamas (third of the day) a bit of water, more medicine very slowly and into bed - where he is now!)

What the hell is that - do we think we can contribute it to teething or do we think we might have something else going on? He does have a temperature too although isn't clamy or sweaty, just a hot head! His cheeks don't seem to be red anymore either!

What do I do if he wakes in the night (which I am expecting him to do) and what do we think it might be - teething/cold or something nastier?! Mum reckons its teething/cold and that everything is out of kilter.

I might add that I did give him new medicine yesterday on advice from the chemist - Calpol wasn't working, so I gave him Medised Infant. I read on the box that it could cause stomach upset! What do we all think?

the runny tummy could be a combination of teething and the medicine. Ds1 always gets a bad tummy after calpol, and with ds2 the ampunt of dribble that gets swallowed when teething really loosens his nappies.
If he has a temperature then the medised should help that.
If you are worried take him to see a doctor tomorrow.

Agree with Zubb.
Ours get runny tummies with teething (followed with the most atrocious nappy rash) and Calpol. Have never used medised so can't help with that I'm afraid. We tend to use the Nurofen for children with teething pains as it seems to work much better than Calpol.

Ok - that helps - but what about the projectile vomiting? Do we think that that is because he is off colour and didn't want food and I force fed him?

Teething babies put anything and everything into their mouths (as if they didn't in any case! ) and the stress of teething can make them more vulnerable to picking up tummy bugs as a result. Do the BRAT diet (bananas, rice, apple, toast) with plenty of water tomorrow. If you have decaffeinated tea, then a little (weak, with sugar but no milk) often helps to settle a dodgy tummy. If it goes on for more than 24h more or his temp doesn't go down, then I would say go to the doctor. Sooner if you feel at all worried, of course.

I reckon its a cold. Keep an eye on him and if it doesn't get any better soon take him to the doc's.

poppyseed · 06/10/2004 20:17

I would think that it was something simply like trapped wind as you said he didn't burp....

poppyseed · 06/10/2004 20:18

If it is a tummy bug I wouldn't give him anything to eat, but give him plenty of fluids, sorry

Jimjams · 06/10/2004 21:34

It's the sorbitol in the calpol that causes tummy problems- lots of children are sensitive to it.

if he vomits again I'd go with tummy bug and treat accordingly, otherwise keep treating as a cold/teething etc.

No more puke so far, thought he was better this morning as 13 hours sleep and no more puking, but now won't eat food, only wants milk and lots of it! Poo is bit better too. Think its definately medicine, cold, teething etc, but really not fun! Thank you very much for all your help.
