dd1 has now been diagnosed with 2nd UTI in 2 weeks , the 1st one she ended up on a drip in hospital. I asked Gp this morning to give me a referral letter as we have private cover, and no one seems to be taking us seriously wiht it re occuring. I grabbed it and walked out , as she had been really rude and uncaring , didnt want to phone the lab for results from tests done on Mon, gave me a long lecture about lab tests and days to wait etc and said there was someone sicker in the hall waiting ! She felt I should just giver her another antibiotic and wait till next week for results. I complained and said that wasnt right , as this needs to be looked into further , she said to wait in the hall and she would ask someone to phone the lab. None of this I thought was wrong of me to push for as ; a) the nurse on the phone this morning said it was poss to push tests through if emergency b) diabetes has been mentioned a few times.

At the bottom of the letter it says ketones 2+ , im not sure what this means. Is it common in UTI's or a sign of diabetes , as dd1 has been drinking like a fish and weeing like crazy,(her nappies have been sodden) she has a fever which doesnt go down and lower abdominal pains. her appetite (normally amazing) has lowered and only wants fruit in the main.

The gp has now called and said that she got through to the lab and the antibiotics she prescribed this morning are not the right ones (no shit sherlock) and that we need to either give her what she had 2 weeks ago, which didn't work or another one to kill the bacteria they have found.

We have an appt this afternoon with a private pead as I think this needs following up ASAP, I dont know whether we should delay it or go ????

hi melsy, not sure about in lo's,but im pg and keep having ketones in my urine, and the mw's and doctors keep saying its because im not eating enough.so could be that because her appetite has dropped shes started producing them because of that??

Tiggiwinkle · 12/09/2007 12:13

If she was so bad with it last time that she ended up in hospital, why don't you take her to the a and e department of the hospital she was in? I am sure they would be happy to see her-and results tend to get through much quicker at hospital too. As you are worried about diabetes, I would definitely take her.

she has eaten some cereal this morn and half an apple, although thats very little for her, shes still having something. So i jst dont know. Could it just be the infection ?

i suffer from hypersemesis (severe sickness) in pregnancy, which means at times i have had ketones in my urine, basically this means that your body is using its fat supplies to fuel activity, so occurs when you are not eating enough for your needs. The scale runs from 1+ to 3+, i would be concerned that if this continued for a long time she would loose weight and feel lethargic.

I also had reoccuring uti's for a while years ago, the trouble is that if treated with the wrong antibiotic they become worse and the bacteria can eventually develop resistance etc.

I would see a doc, ask about the ketones maybe try and get your dd to drink soup or something nourishing and keep an eye on water intake, as if she comes dehydrated (unlikely from what you said) she could need a drip.

So it could simply be she needs some more food. Im just hoping its just that, its just the mix of all the symptoms together are a worry.

Thankfully at the hospital were going to later they will do all the necessary tests right away.

She was on a drip for 2 days with saline , dextrose and intrevenous anti biotics 2 weeks ago. She had been vomiting for a few days up to that, thankfully this time shes not vomiting.

How did you get on Melsy?

melsy · 12/09/2007 18:01

Thankfully not diabetes , as there was no glucose in her water. The worry is that he mentioned the bacteria in the cultures to possibly be E-coli , so we have to get hold of the reports from all the tests done on Mon for him.

But not only does she have a UTI , but her tonsils were found to be enormous and she has tonsillitis too, so hes given her , on top of the amoxicillin 3 times a day, azithromycin once a day, which is much more powerful. She may have had this all along also , which worries me that the GP surgery may have not found at all. He discussed the possibility of removing them if they dont get smaller. We have a follow up next week so he can check her over again and see how things are going. Hes also booking in an ultrasound to check her kidney function , due to the re-occurring UTI.

I dont expect tonight to be very pretty for any of us excep dd2 who will hopefully sleep through!!! >>. Her fever keeps getting higher, but hopefully all the meds will kick in in the next 24hrs.

He suggested she not go to school this week ,(closed anyway for New year now)and possibly not next week either , (its her b'day on tues and she had a party planned ).

Im a walking shaking wreck myself as havent slept for 3 days and been so anxious. I need to find some way to calm down ,whilst its not pleasant, at least not diabetes. I need to put surgery for her out of my mind for now, but its hard not to worry hey.

I appreciate you asking Tiggi. Sorry to go a bit , Im a right worrier and sometimes just need to get it out.

Melsy, ketones just mean that her body was "hungry" even if she didn't feel it. We all have ketones at various times throughout the day (well unless we eat constantly! Actually I probably never have them then! )

The Atkins diet for example actually works by keeping the body in a nearly permanent state of ketosis. It's when the body burns muscle instead of fat because there is no spare fat available.

ShinyHappySchmooo · 12/09/2007 18:05

Meant to add sorry about all this worry you're having with DD. xx

melsy · 12/09/2007 18:58

ahhh ok , good to know about that info with ketones. The ketosis I assume is why aitkins diet is actually very unhealthy. Ty shiny x

It is all a worry with lo's, shes soo fed up with it all, normally so good with taking medicine , were now having a fight with it, shes been so shoved with it the last 3weeks.

Will have to get her loads of ice lollys to make up for it. Need to find those lemonade ones they do in the parks!!??? Or make our own, shell love that.
