Have just terrified myself by reading all the things that can go wrong when you are taking it. Someone tell me that the benefits outweight the downside. Thanks

I was on metformin due to PCOD(currently not as 24 weeks preg). I found it did help in terms of controlling weight (although not sure if pschological). I did have dodgy liver function tests tho and was closely monitored.

Does it actually help you lose weight. Was it resposnible for your pg (congrats on that by the way). I have been trying for another baby for 4 years and was just getting used the the fact that there would be no more when dr gave me the metformin.

I ended up with healthy BMI and was taking metformin 3 times a day. Then i had a period and was also put on clomid. Feel pregnant that cycle. I really do think the BMI being healthy helped.

Personally I think metformin helped.

I really need to lose weight and so far all of my attenpt have been useless I was living in hope that with a 'normal' regular cycle and a healthy eating plan (as opposed to a diet) plus increaded excercise that I would lose weight am I kidding myself???

I dont think you are but I dont know your medical history etc. IF your dr prescribed metformin that he/she must think it of benefit.

singyswife · 11/09/2007 19:38

I have to take it twice a day and see how that goes. I am so living in hope that it works.

I had no problems with metformin - lost a fair bit of weight and no side effects. Stopped while pg and am now on it again.

What dosage are you on? My GP is saying 1 x 500 mg per day but I'm sure I was on more than that before. Think he's wrong (again).

singyswife · 12/09/2007 20:24

Hi there, I am on 2x500mg. How quickly did you notice weight loss. I know I seem to be obsessed with this but I have been trying for so long as I know it will help with symptoms.

bump.

It was over the course of about a year. I took metformin through quite a lot of my pg because at the end I was diagnosed with borderline gestational diabetes so I went back on it (on dr's advice) and I ended up actually weighing less at the end of the pg than I did at the beginning. So I can't really say how quickly it happened but it was over the course of a whole year with other things happening too.

I hope it helps you. I'm going to up my dose - I knew my dr was talking rubbish!

singyswife · 12/09/2007 20:58

I am glad that you had no side effects. I assume it helped with the pcos symptoms. Also do you think it was responsible for you getting pg. (Sorry loads of questions I know but I dont personally know anyone who is on this)

msappropriate · 12/09/2007 21:01

I took it for 2 1/2 months 3 times a day with clomid. Had no side effects (bad or good) but did get pregnant. Didn't take it in pregnancy.

margoandjerry · 12/09/2007 21:07

I didn't have any problems getting pg anyway - I am only slightly PCO so it probably didn't contribute that much. But I do think it really helps with this whole range of symptoms (the weight, and weight-related infertility). I was prescribed it for other pco symptoms by a specialist who was a big fan of it.

Sorry I can't give you much more information about it. All I can say was that I was concerned about going back on it in pg - he persuaded me and I was absolutely fine. I really have never had any problems with it.

singyswife · 12/09/2007 21:08

The funny thing is I had been trying to get pg but no periods etc were making it difficult. After 4 years of trying I decided enough was enough and 2 dds would do me fine. Started a training course and was looking at college. Now I have been given Metformin and am confused about whether or not to use other contraception.
