Chronic Heart Failure - Water tablets and Kidney Damage?

My mum has pretty severe Chronic Heart Failure - she drinks/smokes and doesn't exercise

She has had 2 DVT & has very laboured breathing

She recently went onto hospital for nearly 3 weeks to balance her medications and within a week of coming out they were all stopped because she was getting kidney damage

Her breathing is awful and her legs are very very swollen; the risk is that her leg ulcers will come back

The consultant wants her on water tablets the GP wants to protect her kidneys - is there anything else that could be done? (I am assuming not but I thought I'd ask)

Hello @KatyMac. Just noticed your post. My DF is in a slightly similar position, though maybe not as bad - heart failure, needs water tablets, but the GP gets very twitchy about his kidney test results. He's seen regularly (or was, until the current situation) by a specialist cardiac care nurse who visits him at home.

Basically, the cardiac team say the water tablets are essential and we should refer any dissent from the GP - who isn't a specialist, after all - to them. DF has other problems as well, and without the water tablets he'd be in trouble.

It's very, very difficult though. The GPs are trying to do their best in flagging up the kidney problem. Probably impossible to balance things, unfortunately Is there no chance of your mum cutting back on the smoking and drinking?

No, no chance at all - when she was in hospital she gave up but within 5 minutes of walking back in to her house she lit up

Really struggling atm as we are shielding DH (very vulnerable) and we are vulnerable (DD & Me) an hour and a half away from my mum (very vulnerable I guess)

The Gp threatens her with dialysis the consultant with death....she beleives neither of them and veers into almost dementia like confusion when it's bad

So sorry to hear that, Katy - I'm a couple of hours away from DF too. It must be very hard for you. Sending a hand-hold.
