anyone know anything about stuttering/stammering?

ds is still very little, he's just 2. He has been talking really well and clearly for months now, but the last few weeks he has started to stutter.

It started with words he wasn't sure of, but it has moved on to really familiar words - eg: "where's da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-daddy?"

Am I worrying way too early and it will sort itself out, or should I be thinking about taking him to see HV or something?

Neither of his older sisters stammered.

Sometimes children stutter because thy are trying so hard to get long sentences out their little brains go into overdrive. One of my mindees was like this at around 2. HV suggested ignoring it and it would stop and sure enough it did. Keep an eye on it, but I'm sure it'll be fine.

I suspected that he was too little for it to be a real issue, but not sure if it was one of those things that when got to early can be sorted out iykwim.

Will leave it for now and see how it goes.

In the meantime, do you know if I should help him finish his words, or just be patient and wait for him to get it out?

Ds went through a couple of stages of this - at about 2 to 2.6. I was really worried, but all the advice I had (incl. from MN) was to ignore it, not treat him any differently, not finish his words or sentences. And they just passed as phases. It ws hard not to be worried, because ds himself became a bit distressed and frustrated by it - he just couldn't understand why he couldn't say things.

it is a developmental stage - their brain is working faster than their muscles.

Mine have been through it a number of times - often takes the form of repeating a word a few times.

It usually only lasts a few weeks, maybe a month or two at most.

squonk i worry about my lo too, as she does repeat sounds and words quite a bit.

but then she's only 18 mths, so perhaps i'm being a bit premature in worrying. glad you started this thread tho. shall have a quick look at link too.

DD did this for about 8 months from 2.5-3.5
It worried us dreadfully, I spoke to sppech and language who gave us helpful advice re ignoring it and by the time DD's appointment came through it had settled.

11yo dd2 stammers from time to time. She began when she was a toddler and it still pops up now and again, when she's stressed or excited about something. It's becoming less and less as time goes by and I'm sure she'll throw it off eventually.

Sorry, I had a rl there for a while! I know everyone has already said ignore it, but I hate to leave a question directed at me unanswered! Mindee wasn't long with his stammer either. Its so easy to want to finish their sentence or say 'spit it out' but you shouldn't!
