Hysterectomy

I had fibroids which where picked up on an MRI scan. The consultant said one of them looked a little suspicious so performed a hysterectomy. Is this a normal thing to do? It seems like a sledgehammer to crack a nut. The pathology report said it was just a fibroids. I feel this was a bit excess and I am now feeling very down over it. I am 55

I was told if it’s big or if the bleeding can’t be controlled they need to do a hysterectomy. Perhaps that’s why?

I had uncontrollable heavy bleeding because of a fibroid. Other treatments failed. They discussed it with my though first. But it was made clear that this was the best option. I feel glad that it happened now because I was suffering badly from anemia.

From what i believe (I'm not a doctor), you can have a myomectomy which is removal of fibroids. However, this operation can have very heavy bleeding. If they had done this and the fibroid was indeed cancerous, they would have gone back to do a hysterectomy anyway. Given your age and the fact that it looked suspicious on scan, maybe they thought going straight for a hysterectomy was the best option for you. If you are unsure, I would ask for another appointment with them to discuss or discuss with your GP.

Presumably you gave your permission for the surgery - the consultant must have discussed it with you ? They don't do major surgery without talking about it.

It's understandably a shock, but sounds like the right choice. Trying to remove the fibroids might have potentially caused a big bleed in some situations, leaking cancerous cells everywhere. Think of that alternative! Get well soon
