Tinnitus... what does yours sound like?

Suffering with tinnitus just now (or at least I think that's what it is!). Beeping and ringing noises sometimes a bit musical!? In need of some reassurance. What does your tinnitus sound like?

Like a stationary car with it's engine running. Before I realised it was tinnitus, this is was I thought I could hear when I was lying in bed.

Mainly a high pitch whistling sound but can be a dull thumping sound. Worse at times when it’s very quiet and night time - I’m often heard talking to myself or tapping a surface to refocus away from the sound. The high pitch whistle can be painful.

Sometimes it sounds like someone is playing an old computer game in the distance. By that I mean a song with maybe 3 or 4 notes? I hear it most at night when I'm about to go to bed.

It used to be, I don't get it as bad now. Maybe because my conditions are better controlled.

Like a radio that’s not quite tuned in properly. I tend to fall asleep with the bedroom telly on, otherwise it’s unbearable.

High pitched piercing sound and low drone like an engine in the other ear. Sucks a lot. Worse when I've got a cold.

Mine is like a cross between a moped engine and a bee buzzing. Worse in my right ear and most noticeable at night when I'm trying to sleep.

Being in a wind tunnel that sort of sounds like 'wuuum' 'wuuum' It drives me crazy!

Vit B12 usually kicks it into shape as the low stuff I found was down to a deficiency in b12

Used to have a high pitched ringing, went through the process of seeing a doctor, being referred etc & then it just disappeared. Was very relieved when that happened!

A high frequency pure tone. Exactly like the ones you would hear in a hearing test. Slightly different in each ear. Mine is constant and permanent. Developed during a bad cold and never went. I hope yours is temporary!

High pitched tone in the background most of the time.

First thing in the morning - random songs. I hear them as if they are being played on the radio, but when I concentrate or think about it, they're gone.

Whistling, hissing and ringing in both ears for 30+years! Sometimes have to ask OH if noise on TV etc or in my head! Also have a degree of high frequency hearing loss

High pitched noise for me too, only had it for a few months.

High pitched whistling noise. It comes and goes. Sometimes also the sound of my own heartbeat, which is very disorientating. It speeds up when I move around. First time it happened I thought someone was using a pile-driver in the distance.

I have moderate to severe hearing loss and like inkydinky I have tinnitus that sounds like several of the hearing test noises being played at once constantly in both ears. Fun! Hearing aids do help a lot though and I only notice it at night usually, although it doesn't stop me sleeping. I've somehow trained my brain to ignore it most of the time. Sometimes the noises change or get louder and that's when it bothers me the most.

More of a hissing noise like someone frothing coffee.... when I first got it, it was really high pitched and loud following a hugely stressful period and severe tooth infection.

I agree with the brain training philosophy.....

hard to explain and it changes, it is mostly a low but loud drone that whooshes around, like machinery, but it can 3-4 times a day change to a high pitch whistle for 20-30 minutes.

The only time I don't hear it is if something else loud masks it, but I worry that may damage my hearing more. White etc noise apps don't work for long. Being in a car always masks it.

Never silent...for 7 years now.

@CheekyMango do you get B12 injections or just take vitamins? I have had bloods taken years ago and they said B12 was ok but would try a supplement if you think it works?

The main one is a high pitched eeeeeeeeeeee noise. There are others some are more musical, some fluctuate in tone. It’s permanent, had it since childhood.

I hear it more when I’m poorly, I assume that’s because I can’t filter the sound out as well as normal.

Low frequency like a pneumatic drill in the distance or a foghorn. It took me a long time to realise it wasn't a real noise. I always assumed tinnitus was a high pitched ringing sound.

I did go to a hearing clinic where they taught me you need to train/trick? your body into ignoring it. I'll try and explain if anyone is interested?
