Does anyone know if it normal for a surgeon to phone a ward to check on a patient after an operation?

I work in surgical wards in hospital and yes the surgeon usually sees the patient post op unless they are still in theatre with another patient.

Yes my son has had surgery twice and both times the surgeon came to see how he was doing.

Ok thats good to know, didn't see the surgeon after but nurse told me he had phoned down. Wasn't sure if it was normal or if I should be worried.

No I would say that's completely normal and he's doing a great job.

Completely normal, they like to know how their patients are doing!
