To wonder what's causing my anemia

Just wondering if anyone has had a similar experience to me.

Since being pregnant in 2017 I've had reoccurring Anemia and im not overly sure what's causing it.

I have medium flow monthly periods no flooding but do lose what I would say was an average amount. I eat red meats, veg most days and have a low dairy/caffeine diet. I don't have any pain or discomfort in my stomach (so guessing not ulcer or fibroid related) and I am not eligible to donate blood so not that either.

I had a blood test in September followed by 3 months of iron tablets twice daily and felt fine during January when they stopped, but this last week I'm feeling exactly like I did in September and I'm exhausted again despite sleeping well and napping most days.

I'm wondering what is causing it, can periods be the sole reason for this or is it something else?

I’m severely anaemic because I don’t absorb iron from food stuffs or iron supplements. The only way we’ve found that I can get it to stay is through infusion

Can be a sign of coeliac disease - ask your gp for a blood test.

You can eat all the iron you like, but you have to have it with vit c or it wont absorb. So red meat needs to be eaten with some tomatoes, bell peppers etc present in your meal.

Unfortunately you might just need to take supplements all the time. Spatone or feroglobin liquid from the chemist are both good and gentle on the tummy.

I have flooding periods so have to take something all the time. I had a transfusion about 2 weeks ago which helped masses too with the tiredness and breathless feeling.

Coeliac stops you absorbing iron. Have you had a test for this ?

Pumpkinandpeas · 18/02/2020 12:16

Thanks all no haven't been tested for coeliac I have stubborn veins and they shut down after a few drops of blood come out it's very frustrating. I'm booked to see a good doctor soon who I will mention it to as it could well be something more than just my periods causing this.

As above they were looking into coeliacs for me at the end of last year as they can cause it. Mine ended up being caused by bowel cancer.
Push for an infusion though I felt sooo much better after one tablets generally do nothing for me.
