How long does tonsillitis last ?

So it’s been 3 weeks, three rounds of antibiotics (IV in hospital after sepsis, orally on discharge form 7 days and now I’m on the next lot now and due to finish them Friday (10 day course of penicillin this time)
All my symptoms have gone - the cough, fever, sickness, headache, everything , but my tonsils are still swollen and it’s agony to swallow but only hurts on the left hand side . All the yellow pus has gone, but the pain is still excruciating. It gets worse at night probably due to me talking all day at work.
I’m pregnant so limited to what pain relief I can take so I am just taking paracetamol and then the penicillin for the infection.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated and received . I’m thinking I’ll go back to the dr Friday if the pain is still bad but is it normal ? If it is then I don’t want to waste a drs appointment. I’ve never had it like this before I’m sure. I have only ever had tonsillitis three times in my whole life (I’m 25) and two of those times I was little so mum can’t remember .

Thanks In advance

You poor thing. I had it recently, lasted 2 weeks. I took the antibiotics and it went away, only to come back again a week after that. I wouldn’t take the antibiotics again so all in all I was ill for about 4-5 weeks Sad

Hope it gets better soon

SisterAgatha · 17/02/2020 20:23

Some advice, I blitzed up some raw ginger and oranges with some honey and found that the next day I was slightly better. On the days I didn’t, I felt like crap again. It didn’t hasten recovery as such but I did feel a bit less pain.

Haggisfish · 17/02/2020 20:25

Oh my god you poor thing. Have you tried gargling with a peroxide mouth wash? That helped me. Personally I might phone the ward you were on and ask their advice. How is your temperature?

GaaaaarlicBread · 17/02/2020 20:25

@SisterAgatha oh bless you! It’s so so awful I have never been so poorly as I was in hospital , it turned septic overnight it was awful. I’m so confused now though as thankfully I feel fine other than the pain and swelling so it’s so odd. I’ll give it another week or so then and if it’s no better I’ll take a visit . Mine came back a few days after finishing the Amoxicillin, then the Dr told me I shouldn’t have been on that as it wasn’t strong enough which is why it came back! So put me on another penicillin drug and thankfully that has got rid of the white spots and other symptoms but the pain is just something else!!

@Haggisfish honestly I’m not usually a complainer with health but this is so bad! My jaw hurts and the back of my tongue is sore too. I’ll go and take my temperature and see what it’s like .

Not tried mouthwash , and only have normal aldi basic in the house so I’ll buy some tomorrow to see if that helps ! X

Gosh you poor thing, illness is definitely worse when pregnant

Second hydrogen peroxide, just check if you can use it when pregnant

chocolatespiders · 17/02/2020 20:27

That's sounds rotten. Pain in throat is so awful.
My dd has been in hospital before with tonsillitis and they gave her Difflam throat rinse to soothe the pain. We now keep a bottle at home which we buy from Asda pharmacy to quickly soothe any throat niggles. The rinse is good if you gargle it as it coats the throat.

GaaaaarlicBread · 17/02/2020 20:33

@Haggisfish just taken my temp and it’s 36.5, so very normal for me. When I first went into hospital it shot up to 41, it was so grim .
@ShirleyPhallus it really is because I find myself thinking ‘when does the glowy part of pregnancy start’ lol . @chocolate I’ll see if I can get some of that if I’m allowed it . The pain is like no other , all round my glands hurts and I dread swallowing ! It’s only on one side but it’s weird as the side that hurts is the less swollen side!

I am allergic to the first line treatment so I took amoxicillin as well, it’s not the greatest for tonsils. That might be why both of ours hasn’t shifted. Hospital as well Sad rest up Flowers

GaaaaarlicBread · 17/02/2020 20:46

@sister I think I was allergic too as it made me so incredibly poorly and my BP dropped drastically each time I took it and I passed out , but they still sent me home taking it !
I’m really hoping they’re just very scarred and that it’ll just take a few days for the pain to ease as I can’t bare having to take any more meds as I’m so worried about the baby! Even though I had my scan and it was jumping away happy as Larry ! Xx

I hope your allowed it. They give difflam rinse to people after they have their tonsils removed.
Dd uses it now to try and stop things developing and it seems to work.
Could you tolerate a Mcdonalds milkshake?

Nogodsnomasters · 18/02/2020 07:05

How are you feeling today op? I would wait until you finish the antibiotics before seeing GP unless you get worse again with temp etc. I was in the same boat last year minus being pregnant (god love you, couldn't imagine both at same time).

I had strep throat from scarlet fever caught from my child and had 7 days anti-b's which seemed to kick it. 6 days after course finished it was back with a vengeance 10x worse, started 2nd round of antibiotics but after 24hrs I was getting worse not better, couldn't swallow my own saliva and therefore couldn't get any tablets down nor water so ended up being admitted to hospital for IV antibiotics, fluids and steroids. I believe the steroids were what helped the most to reduce some swelling so I could force tablets down, they sent me home after 24hrs with a new 10 day prescription so altogether it was 12 days of anti-b's the 2nd time round and honestly my pain wasn't gone until about the last 2 days of medication.

So there is still hope that by the end of your course you could be on the mend.

GaaaaarlicBread · 18/02/2020 07:53

@chocolatespiders ooo I could have a milkshake actually , that would be so nice. I’ll grab one on my way to work , or maybe even a smoothie . Just having a yoghurt for breakfast now and that’s nice and cool. They don’t hurt at all today @Nogodsnomasters , they hurt all night and then by morning it settles somewhat and then comes back around 4 ish and lasts all night it’s ever so odd. You sound like you had it really rough, the dr who gave me these new antibiotics said I could’ve got scarlet fever from using amoxicillin for that type of infection with it not going fully, which threw me a bit as I didn’t know you could get it like that but he said it’s ever so nasty! You’ve given me hope thank you, fingers crossed it’s all better by the time it’s all out my system this weekend x

That is strange that it's coming and going like that but at least you are feeling some relief at some points in the day, hopefully it won't be much longer until you're fully recovered

BrokenBrit · 18/02/2020 09:27

Oh my goodness that’s terrible. When I was younger it would last 2 weeks and need antibiotics. Now I am in my thirties I seem to throw off bacterial tonsillitis in about 5 days without antibiotics.

I think I know when it’s bacterial as it isn’t accompanied or followed by any symptoms such as running nose/ cough etc. Just the localised throat symptoms. I think it’s worse during pregnancy and I hope you feel better really soon. Can you gargle salt water? I find that soothing and also colloidal silver spray, if it’s safe during pregnancy, is quite effective.

Haggisfish · 19/02/2020 19:12

How are you op? Hope it’s getting less painful.

GaaaaarlicBread · 20/02/2020 08:06

Doing so much better now thank you so much!! Still sore in the evening but much better generally ! Thank you! Xx

chocolatespiders · 20/02/2020 10:24
