When to see a dr about back pain?

I have had severe back pain for the last few weeks. No obvious reasons why. Its in my lower back and constant pain. I use muscle rub and take pain relief tablets but it only eases it slightly and for a very short time. If i go to the dr's will they just prescribe more muscle rub cream? Can back ache be a symptom of something more serious?

Backs are so complicated they might never figure it out.
Do you have zero idea what started it?

No idea. Ive not done anythinh (that i can think of) that could of triggered it. Ive googled back pain but 1000 different things come up. Maybe ill just wait a few more weeks and if pains still there go and see gp.

If you don't want to go to the GP then think about a chiropractor? It may be a trapped joint which they may be able to help with ?

as above. It could be anything at all. I get lower back pain. Its actually Sacroiliitis which is caused by osteoarthritis. I only know this because I had a sudden onset of pain at the top of my leg/hip for no apparent reason at all and they saw what was going on in a CT scan which covered my whole hip area.
