Well this is embarrassing

I'm on codeine for a broken leg, but I'm not constipated.

I've had abdo pain for a couple of weeks but bms are fine. Until today! Copious amounts of bright red blood in the loo, turning the water red, on the paper, in my pants and on top of the stool.

I don't have an itchy or sore bum, no other symptoms of piles but the blood. Is it worth a call to the dr or just wait a bit for it to resolve itself?

If you've been constipated and are straining to go, this could have caused an internal pile or external pile. However, that sounds like alot of blood so I'd want to go make sure of where the bleeding is coming from and will it stop on it's own or do they need to stop it

Yes I would contact the GP. Blood without any pain or itching is unusual for a fissure. Nerve endings inside the rectum are less so a big pile might be less symptomatic and is the most likely explanation. However the bright red/dark red blood thing is an overplayed generality that makes me wince whenever I see it on MN and we are advised to see a GP for any rectal bleeding, as in rare cases bright red blood can be indicative of cancer.

If there's a lot of blood and it's in your pants, and seems to keep bleeding on and off, it could be a thrombosed haemorrhoid - I've had one if those, it was not pretty.

I think you'd know if you had piles, however - when I got mine it all happened at once, I didn't already have one when it ruptured. Had an episode of IBS one afternoon, that was it.

If it keeps bleeding get thee to the GP and show 'em. Embarrassing but necessary!

In France so a bit different but I was hospitalized with red poo. Turned out I'd eaten to much chorizo! Definitely rather embarrassing.

Are you still having abdominal pain? Do you have pain when your bowels move? In which case you may have a fissure, or some other things. I'd give your GP a call to ask if you could speak to the duty GP. I think its totally worth a call.

Oh thank God. You’ve saved me the bother. I get sick of correcting this fallacy every fucking time someone mentions rectal bleeding.
