Joint pain in back

I was in a car crash Monday the week before not my fault. I had physio and physio said I have 8inches of joint pain in my spine and muscular pain in my neck and shoulders. Two questions first is what's the difference between joint and muscular damage? second what sort of recovery time am I looking at please?
