Getting worried can anyone help?

Went to the doctors last Friday with back ache. Gp prescribed co-codamol and Naproxen. Had naproxen before so didn’t think there was would be an issue.

Woke up in the middle of the night on Saturday morning and felt the worse sickness ever, was sick and had blood init. Pain passed and every time I ate that day my stomach was in horrendous pain, (bloating / feeling full feeling)

Was concerned by this point so rang 111, they advised a & e. Saw a doctor and they said I have Gastritis caused by the Naprozen so he prescribed me Omeprazole 20mg,
I then visited my gp on the Monday for advice regarding my naproxen for my back, she said carry on with all the medications.

Few days after, I am back in pain in my upper stomach after I eat. Feel bloated, and sick.
Back to the doctors tomorrow but getting fed up of the feeling now.

Does anyone know what it is or any tips?
Thanks in advance

Any luck with the doctors? Did you asked for an X-Ray, CT Ultrasound, blood tests to rule out anything sinister?

Sound like it could be gallstones or kidney stones? Lost appetite or weight? I am not a Doctor, I hope you are feeling ok.

I meant to say I would go back to the Doctors to ask for a blood tests, Ultrasound scan etc

You poor thing. I had gastritis a couple of years ago. It was exactly like you describe...fullness bloating and stomach pain. I had it for about 2 or 3 weeks and I didn't get any sleep for about a week. The only relief was...tmi....sitting on the toilet as if I was doing a poo. So I spent many nights just sat on the loo. I can't take the proton pump inhibitors as they give me the runs so I wasn't prescribed. They shouk d have helped you. Its no harm seeing the doc again but they might say it's a time thing.

Although you need an answer as to the cause...mine was just following a tummy bug.

Ok so went back to the docs yesterday morning they have completely stopped my Naproxen and increased my Omeprazole to three daily. I’ve also just been diagnosed with peptic ulcer now

But had no scans or anything.

Thanks everyone x

I'm surprised they said to carry on with the Naproxen after your first visit!

Stop naproxen, have more omeprazole would be normal management. No scans.

And never ever have any tablets like naproxen again - so no ibuprofen, aspirin etc.

yorkshireteaspoonie · 18/01/2020 09:17

I'd def question the first GP who have you the naproxen without the PPI's as NSAIDS are notorious for gastric issues, honestly gastritis has made me feel like I was dying sometimes the pain was so intense rising from my stomach up my chest. Until you get some proper answers I'd say keep chugging gaviscon/ rennie... you can't overdose on them and it will at least help keep the burn down xx good luck

Hannahjade94xx · 18/01/2020 10:27

Yes been prescribed some Gaviscon too, feeling much better without the naproxen.

It’s mad because I’ve had naproxen in the past and I have been fine.

I have this issue from time to time with ibuprofen. The only way I can prevent it is only taking it on a full stomach, if I don't then I get exactly what you described. I have had it once though even after taking it on a film stomach. I often wonder if it's connected to wherever I am in my cycle, whether my stomach is more sensitive at some times of the month. For this reason though I only take ibuprofen when I'm desperate.

bobstersmum · 18/01/2020 12:25

*full stomach!

Hannahjade94xx · 18/01/2020 16:35

I get with a full stomach! Feel better now x

I've had gastritis many times and now I'm on ranatidine daily x 3....in addition when I had naproxen last month for a dodgy back they said to take omeprazole too. It was fine and didn't irritate.

I'm sure you will feel better after a couple of weeks taking the omeprazole and then maybe they will reintroduce the naproxen.

I would also recommend actimel yoghurts they soothe my tummy!

So pleased you've got some answers and hoping for a speedy recovery. Best wishes
