DS has put a raisin up his nose. Do I need to do something about it?

Why do children do things like this just before bedtime? I am looking on the nhs website but it doesn't seem to mention raisins and noses .

A friend recently took her dd to A&E with a piece of lego stuck up her nose. The held the other nostril closed and got my friend to blow into her dd's mouth, which forced the lego out. Not sure if I would want to attempt this myself though.

Good luck

You need to get it out otherwise it could cause an infection. If you can't do it yourself take him down to A&E and they will remove it.

elasticbandstand · 29/08/2007 19:08

have you got tweezers,
otherwise have you got minor injuries department, instead of waiting hour and hours in A & E?
my dd put cotton wool up her nose and i didnt realise, it was up there for days and stunk to high heaven.

Mistymoo · 29/08/2007 19:09

Same advice as SugaryBits - my dd put a pea up her nose and that is how he got it out. That was after an attempt by local hosp nurse with a pair of scissors

EmsMum · 29/08/2007 19:10

call NHS direct. Guess they will either tell you what to do or else that you need to go to A&E.

Get a drinking straw and place just a couple of millimetres inside the nose of offending child, smiling gaily all the while. Close other nostril and suck with all your might!
It works on peas and sweetcorn, it might work on a raisin! Let me know for future reference.

i know it's a pain but you should really take him to a&e don't attempt anything yourself especially with metal objects!

they'll get it out quickly. it could cause an airway blockage if left.

IdrisTheDragon · 29/08/2007 19:14

Could try the straw thing. Wish DH was here (sadly about 50 miles away...)

Oh no!DS also did this, whilst I was driving so couldn t do anything about it..went to A and E as a friends son had done the same thing and had to have it surgically removed due to risk of obstruction, the longer its there the more swollen it gets(raisin not nostril)

We waited 3 hrs to see Dr, when he had a look up his nose there wasnt anything there..He had probably already sneezed it out.Best to get it properly looked at though

MummyDarlingSausage · 29/08/2007 19:29

My dd had a raisin up her nose for about a week when she was about 1. A couple of times I could have sworn I'd seen something dark in there that popped out when she was beathing. No-one believed me until she sneezed one day and it came out very soggy. I'm not being much help am I but if you can get her to sneeze?!

IdrisTheDragon · 29/08/2007 19:30

We are off to A and E

Got back about 8:30, with no raisin .

Have now learned the "mother's kiss" method of removal - one person holds nostril without raisin in, other one (ie me) blows into the mouth and raisin flies out.

DS has had it firmly impressed on him that raisins only go in mouths. I am more concerned about what DD (23 months) is likely to do .

That was a fairly short visit to A&E - sounds like you were lucky!

Naboo · 29/08/2007 22:34

You need to remind him of his raisin venture on his 18th, 21st, 30th birthday and his wedding day... in front of a lot of people. My brother did it with a pea and his ear. Boys.
