Worried about this mole

I'll be making a GP appointment first thing on Monday but kind of hoping someone can put my mind at rest a bit over the weekend Confused

Noticed this scary looking mole when I was showering this morning. There was a tiny black scab on it too that fell off when I was inspecting it. It's a fairly large mole, the size of a pea maybe, and has always been slightly raised. It's usually a mid brown colour and has never had a particularly well defined edge around it.

It looks well dodgy and naturally I'm freaking the fuck out BUT it sits near the top of my buttock where the elasticated seam of my underwear sits. Yesterday I did a brutal CrossFit class involving 150 sit ups and badly chafed/bruised my coccyx sort of area in the process so I'm wondering if it's possible that I rubbed this mole and irritated it with my underwear seam at the same time? Would that explain it do you think?

Roll on GP practice opening on Monday... I'm going to obsess about it all weekend 🙄

It’s possible, but I’d get it checked out.

MoleyMcmole · 11/01/2020 12:20

Will 100% be on the phone for an appointment as soon as the lines open on Monday regardless!

Sounds like you might have irritated it a bit with all the exercising - that might explain the scab. Def worth getting checked out as you say but likely it will be fine. There is an app you can use (?Skin Detect) which will scan your mole and give feedback. I found it reassuring during a few 2-week waits (you will likely automatically be referred as an urgent case but that’s just protocol - all of mine have turned out fine!).

Good tip @ForeverBaffled, thank you! Found a molescan app and it came back 98% benign which is reassuring. Had to take a photo via the app itself and it took a really good clear shot in which it actually looked much more like bruising throughout rather than true moley changes. Extra weight to the pants theory.

I'm going to hold on to that reassurance and quit the googling and photography of my arse for now, will try and put it to the back of my mind until Monday.

Will certainly still be making an appointment as soon as I can get one but feeling a little less doomed!

I’m pleased! I thought it looked a little bruised to be honest. Am sure all will be well 🙂 Good luck.

PixieDustt · 11/01/2020 14:18

It looks bruised to me but I'm no doctor. Good luck at the GP

As a GP with a special interest in dermatology, I don’t have a good opinion of ‘molescan’ apps.

A lot of patients have come in saying that an app has told them a skin lesion is ‘high risk’ - all have, upon examination, been clearly benign.

Plus, the fact that an app has told them their mole looks dangerous has led some patients to accuse me of being unable to identify skin lesions and to try to insist on a totally unnecessary derm referral (not realising that there’s every chance they’d end up seeing me at the hospital anyway, on one of the two afternoons a week I work there...)

MoleyMcmole · 11/01/2020 16:22

Hopefully it's not the reverse of that situation here @ViaSacra 😬

@MoleyMcmole

I’ve never heard of it being the reverse.

Your mole doesn’t look like anything to worry about to me, though obviously I can’t diagnose with certainty from a photo!

Absolutely make an appointment and get it checked in person - especially if the ‘bruise’ doesn’t fade in a couple of days.
