Earache

Feeling sorry for myself, can't sleep as I have the WORST blocked ear and earache! I've never had this before and it's agony!! I was in tears earlier!! I had a nasty head cold over Xmas but felt a lot better the last few days. Yet tonight I tipped my head upside down to dry my hair after a shower and now I'm dealing with this.

I've tried sucking sweets, yawning, gently blowing my nose, hot water bottle by my ear. Nothing works.

To add insult to injury my 9 month daughter has slept the best she's ever slept so far tonight. And I've been awake the whole time.

This is awful!!!!! Any tips????

I'm currently awake with the exact same thing and have to be up at 6. Only thing I've found that helps is massaging my skull, pick a point above your ear, couple of inches, just use your finger and rub around and you should feel a slight pressure or a little lump where your jaw and head has all that nasty stored up pain. Just keep gently rubbing it and it'll release some of the pain. Hopefully.

I'm sorry you're up with it too :( it's bloody miserable. Yes I'm just massaging the bit just underneath my ear where it meets my jaw hoping some of that fluid will release soon. Fingers crossed you get some sleep soon!x

I'm massaging the bit on my head above my ear. It's like a pressure point I think. I couldn't touch my jaw, I'd cry.

Have you had the flu jab? I just ask because myself and dd have not and we have full blown flu. It's been awful. DH has had the flu jab and the one symptom he has is bad earache.

PurpleDaisies · 10/01/2020 02:07

It must be part of s bug that’s going around. Mine is killing me too. Have taken painkillers that have done exactly nothing.

Lolacat1234 · 10/01/2020 02:15

Haven't had the flu jab just this horrible head cold which I thought was clearing! I've taken a decongestant tablet which has helped slightly but still in so much pain!

Have you tried the Valsalva manoeuvre? Here'slink to this and other things to do to 'pop' your ears.

You may have gunk blocking your eustchian tubes and causing you pain because of the pressure. Doing the manoeuvre might give a bit of relief.

mousemousse · 10/01/2020 02:28

I'd try sudafed or any decongestent to get the fluids moving

Lolacat1234 · 10/01/2020 06:39

Thanks everyone, finally felt something move around 3am and got a couple of hours light sleep. Still feel like I have my head in a goldfish bowl though lol. I've tried the manoeuvre very gently but it's just popping the ear that's not blocked and not doing anything for the ear that is lol x

Op if you have earache like this it may well be an ear infection which needs antibiotics. Go see the gp that's unlikely to improve by itself ime. Earache is the worst tho can you "wrap" your ear in a blanket? As a child I had a lot of earache - I had one of my baby blankets to hold gently against my ear (it is still in the house somewhere just in case...) xx

Oof, poor you. Mines manageable at the moment and just a side effect of a rotten cold. Hope you get well soon.
