Deeply split lip won't heal

Posting on behalf of a friend. She has had a split lip; a deep central vertical split down the bottom lip, for over 9 months now (and through different seasons of course) and no doctor or specialist has yet found anything to help. At one point it was splitting further down from her lip a millimetre or so into the below skin. She has tried over the counter remedies, prescribed ones (not sure what as she is abroad) and also CBD oil. The latter briefly made a difference but then stopped working. Has had vitamin and mineral deficiency tests too.

She saw a dermatologist today (not the first one) who said that he hadn't seen anything like it in 45 years of practice. So I thought we would turn to mn to see if anyone has had any similar experience and found any solutions. Any help or advice would be great.

I haven’t heard of anything like this before, but I get deep cracks in the corner of my mouth if I use toothpaste with SLS in. Has she tried avoiding sulphates?

It won't heal back together because the edges will have healed. Possibly may need it split again and held back together with a fine stitch until it heals. A good aesthetic doctor should be able to do this for her.

Needs checking for infection/cancer to see why it wont heal.

thanks, yes she's seen several doctors and they are stumped. The dermatologist today suggested she might have to have a biopsy but obviously she is worried about a chunk being taken out of her lip. I will pass on the suggestion of an aesthetic doctor thanks rm but I think it is still split and sore so not exactly healed. I will suggest checking her toothpaste for sulphates and maybe avoiding these if possible just to try.

My lip splits every year and last year was split for almost 6 months. I tried everything from expensive lip balms to prescriptions. Eventually I found Laniege Lip Sleeping Mask and slathered it on at night and my lip actually started to heal. I used it religiously and tried to keep from talking or smiling as not to resplit the wound while it heals. I hope it works for you too!! I’m telling you I tried everything and had a deep split that was going down past my bottom lip; it was horrendous.

Hi, I know you posted this a long time ago but I’m going through a VERY similar health issue with my lip. I’ve had a split for over 2 years and nothing heals it. I’ve just had a biopsy and I’m waiting on the results. May I ask, did your friend ever figure out what was wrong? Are they okay now?

Hi, I know you posted this some time ago, but I have the same problem of a bottom split lip in the centre..taking so long to heal and this is the second time now.
I’ve recently bought the ‘Fresh’ intensive lip mask..hoping this will help.
How did you get on with your split lip? Did it heal after using something on it?

Try putting manuka honey on it

Another honey advocate - one of the main natural remedies used by the Roman Army and well reported then and now as being the cure for wounds that defy other treatments and refuse to heal - no licking though !

I’m going out to the supermarket in a short while, so will pick some honey up..will have to try and resist licking it off though!

I know this has not been talked about for some time , but if this helps any one at all , I’d like to say what I tried
when I was young I got the same split all the time in the middle of my bottom lip only when I was I’ll , now older same thing split in the bottom lip it’s deep and does go beyond the lip into my skin under my lip it bleeds and is very sore Iv had this for 7 years , then when I was in the sun noticed it became a little better but living in England well yes !!! Rain clouds , but only a few months ago I tried cod liver oil . Which has vitamin D in it like the sun and for the first time ever it’s started to heal , I did think this carnt be right so stoped taking it for few days and it came back so it did work for me , it’s such a relief , weird thing is from having it so long it feels strange with out it now , crazy I know , I did try every thing mixed vitamins doctors who sent me to a specialist but this has worked , after 7 or 8 years yipee , please try you never know . Sorry it’s so long hope you stick with it and read it to the end .good luck . X
