Root Canal query

It's been a while since I had a root canal done. Went to dentist just before Xmas and needed another one on a molar. Had first appointment yesterday to get nerves and roots removed. Now have temporary filling, but rest of tooth is still there and in good condition. I think the dentist said I needed to have a crown, which I'm taking to mean a whole new replacement tooth (costing £300 even though I'm insured). Does anyone know why he can't just fill the existing tooth as it is? I will obviously speak to him about it at next appt., but just thought I'd ask for other experiences ahead of that. Thanks

The tooth is compromised because after rct there is no blood supply and this will increase the likelihood of it fracturing (especially on a molar that bears the brunt chewing wise.) Your dentist is probably being proactive. If it was filled and subsequently fractured it may not be possible to do a jacket crown and you would need a much more invasive post crown or even extraction. Have a chat to them!

Thanks for the reply - I'm off to google jacket crown as I think I've only ever had a post crown before!
