Unexpectedly Pregnant

Last year I was told I need a transplant, heart is 'broken'. This morning I found out I'm pregnant! I wasn't planning on ever getting pregnant again after 10 miscarriages. This has been such a shock for me I dont know what to do, I'm positive my consultants wont be impressed so dnt want to tell them yet. Has this happened to anyone? How did the consultant take it?

Noone can advice without knowing the seriousness of your illness. You say you need a heart transplant, do you mean now or in 20 years?

Pregnancy put massive strain on the heart, so if you are indeed in need of a new heart, you can expect your consultant to tell you that a pregnancy isn't compatible but again, it all depends on the severity of your condition.

Didn't they discuss pregnancy with you already?

Thank you for your reply, I dont need a transplant asap but do need one, they want to start the assessment process so I'm already on the list incase I suddenly deteriorate which they think is unlikely with in the next 5 years.
Yes they spoke to me about pregnancy about 14 yrs ago and gave me the go ahead to ttc, after all the losses I gave up and went down the surrogacy route now have a gorgeous 4yr old. As I say I was not planning or expecting this esp now at 39. My lo is enough for us and completes our family but I wonder about this pregnancy, if it's meant to be, after all the struggles we had

You need to tell your consultant ASAP. Pregnancy can be no joke if you need a heart transplant and you have a 4 year old to take into account here too. You need a plan for things like giving birth.

It’s not about how the consultant takes it - it’s about how your body takes it.

You do really need to discuss this with your consultant. Asking how they “took the news” is an odd thing to say. They won’t be not “impressed”. They may well be worried about the implications for your health. You need that information so you can make an informed decision about what to do next.
