Sinusitis - feel so sick

Perid0t · 30/12/2019 16:02

Heeeeeellllp.

Thanks to the lovely MN ladies, I think I have sinusitis.

Symptoms:

Upper cheek ache
Nose ache
Forehead ache
Throbbing temples
Burning in forehead
Post nasal drip On and off
Ears feel blocked on and off
Dizziness and nausea
No appetite
I was extremely fatigued but that’s improved, I now have insomnia (likely due to the meds?)

Anadin extra is the only thing helping with the lain and I’m in Sudafed. But my god I cannot cope with this nausea. It’s hideous.

Does anyone have any tips? I’ve never had this before. Saw GP on Friday who couldn’t diagnose and nurse this morning who said ears were clear. She offered antibiotics but I declined due to no fever. Wish I’d tried them anyway now! Envy

Steamy bath or shower

Bananarama12 · 30/12/2019 16:06

My mum struggled with it for 2 years. The only thing that improved it in the end was cutting out dairy.

TheFairyCaravan · 30/12/2019 16:12

You could get some Buccastem.

I have it on prescription for nausea associated with migraines and Ménière's disease and it helps a lot.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 30/12/2019 16:15

I have to cut dairy and steam with a steam mug and Olbas oil frequently, really helps.

blackcat86 · 30/12/2019 16:46

I would get the antibiotics. I struggled for months feeling crap until my snot turned neon yellow. The antibiotics were the only thing that actually cured it. Olbas on a tissue helped relieve the pressure as did hot showers.

dontmakemeleavethehouse · 30/12/2019 17:01

I've had sinus for years. 4 operations had. I never get a fever with sinus. I gladly take the antibiotics. They're the only thing that works.

Thecrown3 · 30/12/2019 17:09

Go to pharmacy and get sinutab, take those and steam.
I get sinusitis regularly and try to catch it with these things before gets to needing antibiotics .

Butterbeeeen · 30/12/2019 17:10

Iv had it all over Christmas (and the week before) got antibiotics on 23rd and although I feel much much better than I did I'm still not 100% and need a lie down after the simplest tasks. Hope you feel better soon OP.

Villagegreenpreservation · 30/12/2019 17:34

Actifed is brilliant stuff. Doesn't have any pain relief in so you can still take painkillers plus a saline nasal spray helped me
But I'd accept antibiotics if it gets worse. My sympathies. It's horrid.

Pincepie123 · 30/12/2019 18:53

I feel for you Perid0t, I have something similar right now but it doesn’t sound as severe as you
Face feels flushed to the touch around sinus area
Back of neck ache
Loss of appetite
Feeling out of it but not that tired
Pressure on and off around sinuses but not that painful
HORRIBLE insomnia with it, and I usually sleep like a baby and I’m not even on any meds.
Also a bit chesty.

I’ve just done a saline nose irrigation on one nostril, off to do the other one now and I’ll tell you if it’s any good.
Personally I took a Lemsip last night with a decongestant in it and I woke up an hour later feeling worse. I think it’s important to keep your sinuses moist.

Spinmynipplenuts · 30/12/2019 18:55

Neil med sinus rinse is very good. I’d have taken the antibiotics too though!

Pincepie123 · 30/12/2019 19:03

Just done the nose irrigation thing, it’s so weird. I was actually dreading doing to be honest but little did I know that when you put the nozzle up one nostril the water goes out the other one! It’s not bad at all to do, quite satisfying actually.
I don’t know how much it’s going to help me though because the issue with my sinuses is not actually in the nose but higher up. I don’t have a blocked nose as such.
I really hope you feel better.

I feel your pain OK. I feel sick as a dog with any upper respiratory bug since I had a really bad one a couple of years ago. Promethazine can help with nausea. You can but it over the counter, usually as Phenergan, but you need to say It's for insomnia as that is the only OCT licensed purpose (I found out hard way after being sent to buy it by my GP). It does make you drowsy but that might help you at night x

Jen306 · 30/12/2019 19:24

Depends if it’s viral or bacterial as to if antibiotics would help. If it is bacterial antibiotics are the only thing to make it better for you - If viral you just have to ride it out and so whatever makes you comfortable!

MirkwoodMiss · 30/12/2019 20:47

Travel sickness pills can help with nausea - especially if it's pressure in the ears. I suffer with sinusitis and the pain is dreadful. Steam, Sudafed, massage the pressure points- you have my sympathy, it's awful.

Oct18mummy · 30/12/2019 20:53

Go back and get the antibiotics. I have it now feel like I’ve been punched in the face for the last 5 days even worse when bend down. I’m on day 3 of antibiotics and it’s a tiny bit better hope I see big improvement next few days 😬 paracetamol and ibruprofen helping also

Riv12345 · 30/12/2019 23:52

Hi op
I take Sudafed and ibuprofen, lots of steamy baths or showers.
If this really doesn't help I agree you should take the antibiotics as you could have an underlying infection.
Drink plenty & get lots of rest too.
Hope you feel better soon.

Perid0t · 31/12/2019 07:31

Thanks all. I’ve give it a couple of days and go back if no better x

hoochymamgu · 31/12/2019 07:37

Hope you feel better peri Thanks I had this for years as did DM and DB. Antibiotics!
Also if it's reoccurring ask for an ENT referral from the GP, we all had to have operations to enlarge sinuses. It cured it!
Keep warm, try to sleep.

DeathMetalMum · 31/12/2019 07:41

Ibuprofen works best for me. As it's an anti-inflammatory it reduces any swelling as well as helping the pain. Sudafed (pseudoephedrine) doesn't seem to do a lot.

Pincepie123 · 31/12/2019 08:38

Are you sleeping better now? I don’t seem to be able to sleep for more than 1 1/2 hours without waking up and then I can’t go back to sleep. Going to GP this morning.

Perid0t · 31/12/2019 08:53

@DeathMetalMum ibuprofen doesn’t do anything for me unfortunately

@Pincepie123 not really. I slept more last night but still woke a lot. I hope the gp can help x

Pincepie123 · 31/12/2019 09:12

Bless you. Are you staying awake because of the pain or does it make you restless at night?
If they give me ABs I will take them like a shot. Horrible horrible horrible whatever this is. X

Perid0t · 31/12/2019 09:40

@Pincepie123 insomnia! It’s really irritating. I think it’s the meds which is why I didn’t take them last night and it was a little better.

I should have just taken the prescription yesterday just in case. It was silly really x

OP posts:
Pincepie123 · 31/12/2019 10:38

Just been to GP she gave me a prescription for ABs. She didn’t seem at all concerned about the insomnia as she seemed to think it was related to the sinusitis. I said I wouldn’t have come to the surgery if it wasn’t for the insomnia as I’m beginning to think there’s something wrong with my actual brain. I’ve slept through huge colds before no probs. So why no sleep now? Anyway I’m not going to think about it too much or I’ll drive myself crazy.

Perid0t could you not go back and get them? Nip it in the bud.
