DH back pain

Hi, my DH has had bad lower back pain for a couple of months now, it doesn't seem to be improving and he has to take pain relief every day (paracetamol and ibuprofen). I encouraged him to see the GP last week, which he did, and GP wasn't bothered, but DH didn't tell him about needing pain relief everyday. Would this have encouraged the GP to perhaps do an X-ray or referral? Or is it "normal" to rely on pain killers every day for non specific back pain?
TIA

Is he active otherwise?
can you look up exercises for this type of back pain online?
