Hives

I've had itchy raised skin since monday all over my body. I went to the docs yesterday and she said it was hives although i have no idea why I have them as nothing has changed in my diet or washing powders. It's extremely itchy and I have not slept much even though I am taking prescribed antihistamine. Does anyone know how long this will last for? The itching is unbearable and it the rash seems to be moving around my body. My wrists are all swollen as are my feet and my back is just covered. Feel like I am in a nightmare!

I think if the antihistamines are not giving you any relief and it continues then you need to ask for a blood test to rule out a liver condition.
I didn't think hives lasted for more than a day, until you are still in contact with the allergen.

Thanks. I'm going to give it until the end of day and see. Then it will be 2 full days. I just want some relief!

If the anti-histamines don't work, it could be eczema (some forms of eczema look very similar to hives). The anti-hists won't help eczema (but steroid creams will).

Hives tend to be short term (arrives suddenly but also clears up suddenly) and are usually am allergic reaction to something.

Eczema will linger and is often not caused by anything specific (but rather the body's immune system reacting as though there was something to react to).

I think I might have worked it out. I bought essie nail varnish and top coat on Sunday and it started on Monday. I've taken it off and the itching seems to have calmed down although still there. So I wonder if it's something in their gel effect nail polish. Such a shame as I loved it!

Span update from me. By Wednesday night I became quite poorly. My hands, feet and then my lips got really swollen. And sore. I started shivering. Ended up in a&e and was told I have pneumonia and the rash is a reaction to the infection. So now I'm on steroids, antibiotics and still take antihistamines. Swelling has gone down and feeling better but taking it easy over the next couple of days. Very unexpected as I do t have a cold or cough. At least I can put my essie nail polish on!

I’m fine now but I think it might have been Covid. It was just before it all kicked off and I’m pretty sure it was.
