Alcohol Intolerance or IBS?

Hi everyone,

For a long time now I have had bad reactions to just a few alcoholic drinks, and it never used to happen.

I hardly drink now, but if I have any more than two drinks to celebrate something or socialise, I wake up at around 3am needing the toilet (no.2) and then every half hour I have agonising cramps and a boiling hot head, and diarrhoea, all night, with no sleep, and the diarrhoea gets progressively worse.

I feel wiped out the next day and sometimes still rubbish the day after. I have been told I probably have IBS so maybe alcohol is just a trigger, but I have always had bowel issues and I used to drink a fair bit and never got this!

I'm never sick, it's always cramps and diarrhoea. I've started to dread nights out and I get anxious about events.

I know this sounds like a first-world problem but it really affects my quality of life. I don't even want to get drunk, just relax and enjoy a few drinks! I'm 40 and this has been happening for a few years.

I also have issues with bloating and constipation so I've had lots of tests for lots of things and all clear, thankfully.

The doctors don't have a clue and I also faint sometimes, which has stumped them further!

Does anyone else have anything similar? I have researched this for months but can't find anything like it.

I'll be so grateful for any help,
Thank you! :-)

Well yes I have become intollerant to drink! I used to be able to drink a fair bit, then I cut it back to just 3 drinks, as I hated the hangover, but still had the headache, till I virtually became T total.

I'm considering it! I wouldn't mind just a headache or hangover, but it just messes up my stomach so bad :-(

There seems to be no pattern with which kind of drink so I thought it could be related to stomach acid. Took two months of Omeprazole for possible gastritis but it has happened since :-(
