Cheapest most effective medical treatment for thrush

Ok it's christmas, I'm totally skint and now I have thrush. I'm also on my period so flitting between seeing if that will fix it, and feeling so uncomfortable I'd pay any amount of money if I had it.

So I'll probably bite the bullet tomorrow, and want to keep my conversation with pharmacy brief! What should I ask for?

I also need to pick up a prescription for antibiotics as I have recurrent UTIs which are being investigated. I feel like my fanjo hates me, and having a penis isn't half as expensive.

If Canesten cream, rather than the pessary, is effective for you then you can ask for the generic one, Clotrimazole. It should be cheaper than the branded ones.

Natural yogurt! The live stuff. Bit gross but it’ll clear it up in a few days. I am plagued with thrush and it works every time.

Yes natural yogurt, insert with a tampon applicator. Or ask your Gp if they can prescribe you something as thrush is a side effect of the antibiotics you’re taking.

If you go to a sexual health/ GUM clinic then treatment for thrush is free.

The most effective and fastest treatment for thrush is a single dose of oral Diflucan, which you can get over the counter in pharmacies.
However, OP, if you’re about to start a course of antibiotics, you may well find the thrush recurs afterwards, as they kill off all your useful bacteria as well as the pathogens, allowing fungi such as Candida to flourish.
Have you been screened for diabetes, as recurrent thrush can be a presenting symptom?
And finally, you may be being reinfected by your partner, so it’s worth treating him at the same time as you.

I tried natural yoghurt years ago and it was grim and never worked! Very tempting though while waiting for period to get rid of it I guess.

I dont get recurrent thrush, just UTIs. I've been told the antibiotics don't cause thrush and I don't usually have this problem.

I'll try the yoghurt tomorrow and see if I can hang on a bit longer. Ew though

You can often buy unbranded fluconazole quite cheaply from online pharmacies, and even Amazon.
Obviously best to check with a pharmacist or GP before taking

Generic fluconazole tablet under a fiver or the canesten one same stuff is around 11 pounds and it's exactly the same

Yeah i saw it was much cheaper online i may do that now and then if yoghurt doesnt work it'll be here. If the yoghurt does work itll ward off any potential thrush issues in the future by having prepped!

I had it really severe and the GUM clinic told me the cream only eases the symptoms you need the oral capsule to cure it

Antibiotics don’t ‘cause’ thrush as such because they yeast are already present, but because antibiotics disrupts levels of good bacteria which would usually keep candida numbers down they can trigger it. I find I nearly always get thrush when I take antibiotics. Taking an oral probiotic alongside the course of antibiotics definitely seems to help me.

Cut out sugar. Thrush thrives on it.
