5 week old baby with bottom wind in the night

Hi all
This is my first time using this site.
I have a 5 week old boy (Ellis) who is suffering from pumps during the night. He has been like this from birth & he was solely breastfed for the first 3 weeks then I moved on to giving him one bottle of forumula a day (just before bedtime). He is fed at approx. 11pm (forumla) & 3am (breast from bottle)& 6am (breast). Within the last week he has been waking up more regularly & staying awake longer. He does pump a lot but he is getting very distressed when doing so e.g. straining, pulling his legs up & going very red in the face but not excessive crying. Last week I tried him on Gripe water & Infacol & he was sick after feeding (which he wasn't prior to taking this).
Has anyone had a similar experience?
Do you know of any other worth while remedies to try?
The HV suggested rubbing his tummy & pushing his legs up to his chest but the idea of doing that for 2 hours during the night is a bit tiring for both of us.
Thanks in advance.

dentinox and wind him for 5 mins after every ounce of his bottle then for a good 20 minutes after the whole feed

Welcome to MN!

This is very common and all to do with their immature digestive system. Thourough winding is the only thing that can help really. Infacol did help my DD but gripe water made her sick too - and I think 5weeks is too young for gripe water btw - check the bottle (I may be wrong!).

If it helps this seems to happen to exclusively BF babies too so it is not the formula.

Wind him well before, during and after a feed. Wind him in the different positions too as my DD would burp/"pump" when I swapped positions, especially upright.

It gets better as they get older - about 12 weeks was a turning point I think.

Our HV gave lessons every now and then. Ask them if they do anything similar. I think ours charged £5 for 3 seesions. There are other classes around here too but can be more pricey.

Our Library also stock a book, might be worth looking there?

The Tummy massage definately helped a bit.
