Should I go back to doctor? UTI

Hi, I'm just looking for some advice.

I went to doctor on Tuesday and described my symptoms (period type ache in lower tummy and lower back and blood when I go to the toilet)

She diagnosed UTI but didn't take a sample or anything.

She gave me a three day dose of trimethorprim but told me if it didn't improve to go back on Friday so I wouldn't suggest over the weekend.

It's now Thursday afternoon and I have one more tablet to take tonight but I am still in pain and still bleeding when I wipe.

We have a 'quick' clinic where we can go on and wait so I can go first thing in morning (just means taking time out of work) so an appointment shouldn't be an issue, but should I give it more time to see if the antibiotics work or should they already be working?

They should already be having an effect if they were going to. A three day course is very short. Doc has said go back on Friday in this situation, so do that.

I'm not an expert but I've had a lot of utis (almost permanent at one point before I had my children). Is it actual Blood like fresh blood or is it in your pee? If there's a lot of pain in your back it may be in your kidney. I tend to find the pain is lower under my pelvic bone for a UTI but everyone is different x

Go back. You wouldn't necessarily be completely better by now, but if the antibiotics were going to work you definitely would be improving by now.
Take a urine sample with you. Ideally this should be "mid-stream" - so not the very first bit that comes out.
Your GP wouldn't have needed to test your urine at the first appointment if your symptoms were classic, but all treatment failures should be tested.

She gave me two sample pots incase I needed to go back on Friday.

The blood is when I wipe @mummyofbananas bright red blood. I put a panty liner on and there's a little pale pink on there but bright red when I wipe.

Ps: my period isn't due so it's not that.

I tend to get Trimethroprim-resistant UTIs. Apparently it's not uncommon. Antibiotics should start to work within a few hours, in my experience.

Fwiw, the only antibiotic that has helped me consistently has been ciprofluoxacin - but it has some contraindications so best to check.

AFistfulofDolores1 · 14/11/2019 12:56

Sorry - ciprofloxacin

AFistfulofDolores1 · 14/11/2019 12:57

And get it checked out asap. It can spread to the kidneys rapidly, and that is deeply unpleasant, and dangerous.

I’ve had a million UTI’s but I’ve only ever had bleeding with them once. Turned out to be a bad kidney infection & I ended up in hospital for a week Confused

Def get back & get checked again!

Thanks for advice

I was back this morning and have been prescribed a five day (four a day) course of nitrofurantoin (50g).

She's also sending urine to the lab and will be in touch if needs be. It's very painful, still no burning when I wee, but bleeding is a bit heavier now.

I'd be a bit concerned it's not a UTI, even with a very bad kidney infection I've only ever had blood in my pee rather than actual bleeding. Once when pregnant my full pee went bright red but it was never fresh blood
and I've never had one without burning when peeing 😕 everyone is different o know but maybe go back in a few days if no improvement.

Hi again,

I've finished the course of antibiotics and I am still bleeding.

I am bleeding like a period without tender breasts or any other symptom of a period.

I have had to wear a pad and change it about once an hour or so since yesterday evening.

This isn't helped by the onset of a cold as every time I sneeze, I bleed.

I'm going to ring and see if I can get a doctor appointment today.

You are sure the bleeding is from the bladder? Did you test with a tampon..

Seaweed42 · 20/11/2019 15:56

If the blood is from vagina then maybe its not a UTI. Could be hormonal causing mid cycle bleeding.

Newschapter · 21/11/2019 14:46

Hi,I had a doc appt this morning.

She did an internal exam and said she was content the bleeding was period like/coming from there.

She said she couldn't feel anything during examination but referred me for a gynae appointment to get ovaries and womb scanned.

She said she would be suspecting the beginning of 'change of life' but I'm just 41.

So I guess I will have to wait and see.

Thanks for all the advice and for listening.
